House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) claimed Tuesday on MSNBC’s “The Last Word” that voters were rejecting the “rapidly deteriorating Republican brand” while discussing two special elections in Florida that the Republicans won and one race for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court that the Democrats won. Host Lawrence O’Donnell said, “Let’s begin as we wait for a victory speech in Wisconsin with your reaction to what you’re seeing in those special elections in Florida for two House seats.” Jeffries said, “It was an incredible over performance by the two Democratic candidates into two ruby red districts.”

As my colleague, senior editor-at-large Joel Pollak pointed out, Friday afternoon, CNN made a huge deal of Israel rejecting a "cease-fire deal" based on CNN's made-up premise that there was some sort of a deal. Pollak writes quite correctly that "there was no deal, but a mere proposal" and "there was no indication Hamas would agree to the terms." This deal CNN speaks of never existed. Early returns showed Portland residents voting to keep their city the largest in the U.S. without fluoride in the water. With more than half the expected ballots counted Tuesday night, the Multnomah County election website showed the fluoride proposal failing, 60 percent to 40 percent. Voters in Portland twice rejected fluoridation before approving it in 1978. That plan was overturned two years later, before any fluoride was ever added to the water. The Legislature's nonpartisan fiscal watchdog says prison guards already earn enough money and don't need a 5 percent pay raise proposed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Legislative Analyst Elizabeth Hill says the state can't afford raises for 30,000 prison guards as it battles a widening budget gap. Veteran guards draw nearly $74,000 in salaries - not counting overtime and annual benefits worth $16,000. Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, D-Los Angeles, welcomes the analysis.
