Cases have increased by 8% in just a week with nearly 2,000 people infected by the deadly airborne strain. Some 143 people have now been killed by the “medieval disease” in Madagascar. There are now warnings the plague could stretch across the sea and reach mainland Africa. Such an outbreak would be catastrophic and there are fears the virus could go global. Nine countries are now on high alert and have been told to brace for the plague.

As Germany has gotten overwhelmed by a flood of about two million migrants from the Middle East, Africa and Asia, a corresponding spike in infectious diseases has occurred. A new report from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German government’s central institution for monitoring and preventing diseases, confirms an across-the-board rise in disease since 2015. There remains some controversy about the extent of the increase and the nature of the diseases being reported since the immigrant flow increased dramatically.
