WASHINGTON, Aug. 25, 2006 – Coalition forces recovered three weapons caches Aug. 23 while searching three compounds in Afghanistan’s Paktika province, U.S. military officials reported. The caches consisted of rifles, a machine gun and ammunition, rocket-propelled grenade ammunition, a mine detector and a Taliban banner and literature. Serviceable equipment will be turned over to the Afghan security forces for their use, and an explosive ordnance disposal team will deal with the unserviceable equipment, officials said. Lebanon recovers £300m of Saddam's stash Lebanon's central bank has located and secured £307 million in Iraqi funds, a Treasury official said. David Aufhauser, general counsel in the Treasury Department, said the disclosure by Lebanon was a sign of the progress being made in the worldwide search for Saddam's assets. Aufhauser told the House Financial Services oversight subcommittee that the assets in Lebanon apparently came from Iraq's central bank and other sources.
