he provincial government bit off more than it could chew by dooming pit bulls as Ontario's worst people-biters, the Toronto Humane Society says. Results of a survey of municipalities, released Wednesday, show no significant drop in dog bite cases since the government passed Breed Specific Legislation in 2005 that resulted in "countless" pit bulls and related Staffordshire Terriers being destroyed."This survey shows that the pit bull ban has not resulted in a reduction in the number of dog bites in Ontario," said the THS, which opposes breed-specific legislation. In the THS release, spokesman Ian McConachie quoted then-Attorney General Michael Bryant...

Gereth Sim, 31, is haunted by the moment the French bullmastiff, named Trigger, sank its teeth into little Taylor's face. He said: "I had turned away for two seconds and heard a growl. The next thing the dog had Taylor on the floor and was biting her face. "I punched him until he let her go, then stabbed him with a kitchen knife. Taylor's face was covered in blood. It was like a horror film....

...'Breed legislation isn't working,' says RSPCA chief inspector Jan Eachus, a dangerous dog project officer assigned to the Status Dog Unit. 'No human beings were killed by pit bulls before 1991, but since then we've had one death after another, mostly caused by cross-breeds. Dangerous dogs are not born, dangerous dogs are made, through abuse and neglect, and they can be any breed.'

Neville the pit bull has a job at the ferry lines in Seattle. He works at Seattle's Coleman Dock sniffing for narcotics, weapons and explosives. Pit bulls, who still have a bad reputation, are really very affectionate and sweet dogs, and Neville is one of them. Previously held on death row in Canada, Neville ended up across the border in the K-9 work force. Today, for a dog that was almost euthanized, he's as loving as a dog can be. Neville was the first pit bull to sniff out explosives for the Washington State Patrol, which now has five pit...

CONCORD — She didn't expect the dog to bite her. It was a yellow Labrador, after all — and it was on a leash. The 10-year-old was just riding her bike with a friend on the Contra Costa Canal Trail, staying close to the apartment complex from which her friend's stepfather could watch them from the balcony. None of that mattered when the Labrador lunged, without warning. A week and a half later, the gauze on Priscilla Robles's left leg hides the bite marks, the chunk missing from her thigh, the dead skin from the surgeon's failed first attempt at...

Bill Setzer lay in his bed, sweaty and disoriented. He'd been napping. But now, his two pit bulls, Mara and Moby, wouldn't let him be. Mara was furiously licking Setzer's face. And Moby was repeatedly crashing his 70-pound frame into the man, in a frantic attempt to wake him. Setzer blinked. His vision was blurry. He felt lousy. The 63-year-old Stafford man, who has Type 2 diabetes, reached for the blood sugar meter on his bedside table, pricked his finger and read the numbers on the screen: 29. A normal blood sugar level ranges between 70 and 140. Setzer took...

There are 4 million people in the city of Los Angeles and who knows how many dogs. Of its canine residents, the city is sure only of this: About 120,000 are licensed -- as required by law -- and a lot of others are not. "Nobody has ever done a census. It's anyone's guess how many are out there," said Kathy Davis, general manager of L.A.'s Department of Animal Services, who declined to pick a number. "But we certainly don't assume we have all of them licensed." In this time of budget cuts, that spells opportunity for revenue. Dogs don't...

February 06, 2010|By David Kelly Reporting from Riverside — The pit bulls sprawled around the Riverside County Animal Control office this week were an unusually tranquil lot -- more fluffy the cat than hound from hell. Each had been sedated before its turn on the operating table to get fixed, part of an ambitious project aimed at putting a dent in their exploding population here. "We always knew we had a lot of pit bulls, but when we analyzed the data we saw that half our population was dominated by this breed," said Robert Miller, director of Riverside County Department...
