Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending the annual conservative RedState Gathering, where nine Republican presidential candidates gave fiery speeches. Although all were very impressive speakers, I kept applying the “Buckley rule” — these days, generally thought of as “nominate the most conservative candidate who is electable” — and did not feel confident that any of them could actually win the White House in 2016.

Gov. Jay Nixon said Saturday that he is vetoing a measure that would block immigrants who are illegally in the U.S. from receiving money under Missouri’s A+ scholarship program. He made the announcement during a speech to the National Council of La Raza, a Hispanic advocacy group that is having its annual convention in Kansas City. The measure would have required students be permanent residents or U.S. citizens in order to get the state’s A+ Scholarship, which provides two years of free tuition at community colleges. It was from an obsessive Darwin-defender that I learned of the Anti-Defamation League's attack on the theatrical documentary Expelled, for "misappropriat[ing] the Holocaust." This guy is constantly emailing me. He warned that the ADL had just "issued a terse press release today condemning the equation of ‘Darwinism' with Nazism in Expelled. How can you call yourself a religious Jew and still believe in such Fundamentalist Protestant Christian nonsense like Intelligent Design?" I thanked my email correspondent for a good laugh.
