Kindness is in our power even when fondness is not. ~Henry James~ Compassion is language the deaf can hear and the blind can see. ~Mark Twain~ Carry a heart that never hates, a smile that never fades, And a touch that never hurts. Today I bent the truth to be kind, and I have no regret, For I am far surer of what is kind than I am of what is true. ~Robert Brault~ Treat everyone with politeness, even those who are rude to you, not because they are nice but because you are. Never look down on anyone unless...

Monday, January 31, 2011 New USCCB Document Highlights Biblical Quotations in the Mass The Catholic Mass draws heavily from Scripture--in every prayer you hear quotations and allusions to biblical texts. In fact, last year I did a series presentations now available through Saint Joseph Communications here (shameless plug!) exploring the biblical backdrop for the prayers of the Mass.  Now the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has put out a footnoted version of the prayers of the new translation of the liturgy, alerting you to the Biblical background of each of the prayers. Some examples: The response: "The Lord be...

I've been collecting fragments from the writings and sayings of others for nearly forty years. They have always struck me as pieces of a vast mosaic that is being slowly and painstakingly assembled. As in an actual mural mosaic (Byzantine, complex, more than the sum of its parts), if one stands too close to it the image blurs. Focus on a single component and the part becomes the whole, throwing all into misinterpretation. Stand back, find proportion, locate the range of vision, and the portrait emerges. It is my hope that through the passages quoted here a portrait of humanity...

This is the first of a new trend I plan to start on My blog. TO post famous quotes. What inspired me was this quote from Winston Churchill. It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read books of quotations. Bartlett's Familiar Quotations is an admirable work, and I studied it intently. The quotations when engraved upon the memory give you good thoughts. They also make you anxious to read the authors and look for more. WINSTON CHURCHILL My Early Life: A Roving Commission (1930), Chapter 9 (Education At Bangalore)Indeed, there is a lot we can learn from...

There's a passage from a 2005 essay by Umberto Eco that I've frequently quoted, as it neatly defines several elements of the mindset of our age in just a few carefully thought out sentences: G K Chesterton is often credited with observing: "When a man ceases to believe in God, he doesn't believe in nothing. He believes in anything." Whoever said it - he was right. We are supposed to live in a [skeptical] age. In fact, we live in an age of outrageous credulity. Indeed. While it's a cliche that ours is a cynical era, it really is just...

“The only freedom deserving the name, is that of pursuing our own good in our own way, so long as we do not attempt to deprive others of theirs, or impede their efforts to obtain it. Each is the proper guardian of his own health, whether bodily, or mental and spiritual. Mankind are greater gainers by suffering each other to live as seems good to themselves, than by compelling each to live as seems good to the rest.” —John Stuart Mill Work as if you were to live 100 Years, Pray as if you were to die To-morrow. Benjamin...

Quotations about the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi: ``Al-Zarqawi was eliminated.'' - Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. --- ``Whenever there is a new al-Zarqawi, we will kill him.'' - al-Maliki. --- ``Now Zarqawi has met his end, and this violent man will never murder again. Iraqis can be justly proud of their new government and its early steps to improve their security. And Americans can be enormously proud of the men and women of our armed forces, who worked tirelessly with their Iraqi counterparts to track down this brutal terrorist and put him out of business.'' - President Bush.

The Source The Quote The Translation June Quotations Harry Reid, June 29, 05 “The president's numerous references to September 11 did not provide a way forward in Iraq .” The president's numerous references to September 11 did nothing to appease the terrorists. Henry Waxman, June 21, 05 "It is a disgrace that the matters relating to the treatment of detainees have not been meaningfully investigated by this House. It's frustrating that we can't get political traction out of criticizing the military. Bill Moyers, June 10, 05 “It’s very hard for a liberal to throw red meat simply because the...

With increasing regularity, leaders of the National Democratic Party are seeking support for their economic agenda in, of all places, the Bible. Failed presidential candidate John Kerry, for example, persists in appealing to the New Testament book of James. "Faith without works is dead," he intones, suggesting that "works" here includes the works of lawmakers as they spend other people's money. In like manner, Nancy Pelosi, the House minority leader, is wont to quote the teaching of Jesus that "[i]nasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."...

Since we have just finished celebrating Pesach and our exodus from Egypt over 3,300 years ago, I thought it might be interesting to look at our impact on the world through the eyes of those who we have impacted! Here are some thoughts for your consideration: "Some people like the Jews, and some do not. But no thoughtful man can deny the fact that they are, beyond any question, the most formidable and the most remarkable race which has appeared in the world." -- Winston Churchill-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The Jew is that sacred being who has brought down from heaven the everlasting...

As conscientious followers of politics are doubtless aware, the better sort of American liberal is troubled by the unprecedented vituperation that has stolen into the public discourse. The Clintons refer to it as "The Politics of Personal Destruction" -- well said, Bill and Hillary. They, and concerned citizens like them, recognize that this inflammatory rhetoric comes, in the main, from the right -- or as they put it, "the extreme right." Dr. Howard Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, likewise is alarmed by the abusiveness from the right or more generally from Republicans whom he has recently identified as...

The 5 categories are Economics, Government, War and Peace, Success, and Education. Too many to list them all here, some favorites: Ronald Reagan One hundred nations in the UN have not agreed with us on just about everything that's come before them, where we're involved, and it didn't upset my breakfast at all. Mark Twain Never let your schooling interfere with your education. John Stuart Mill War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who...

"France has neither winter nor summer nor morals. Apart from these drawbacks it is a fine country. France has usually been governed by prostitutes." ---Mark Twain "I would rather have a German division in front of me than a French one behind me." --- General George S. Patton "Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without your accordion." --Norman Schwartzkopf "We can stand here like the French, or we can do something about it." Marge Simpson "As far as I'm concerned, war always means failure" ---Jacques Chirac, President of France "As far as France is concerned, you're...

A young Yasser Arafat ARAFAT: NOTABLE QUOTES Yasser Arafat's words turned from war to peace as the years passed in his struggle for a Palestinian state. He first came onto the world stage in the 1960s as head of the Palestine Liberation Organisation and became Palestinian president in the 1990s. Here are some notable quotes he made in speeches and interviews: 1968 - "Zionism is an embodiment of neo-Nazism... intellectual terrorism and racial exploitation." 1969 - "Our new generation is tired of waiting for something to happen. Isn't it better to die bringing down your enemy than to await a...

"When you hear someone say 'X' it is time to reach for your sixgun" or words to that effect. Or perhaps, "When you see someone do 'X' it is time to reach for your gun," You get the idea. It sounds a bit like Ayn Rand but I think not her. The folks at Quoteland.com do not seem to come up with anything...

I'm having an argument with some liberals and the Internet is not going to be of much help, so I need someone who has a print source of Confucius quotes. The quote is: Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. There are a bunch of whacky liberals where I work saying that its a quote from Nelson Mandela. I'm trying to tell them that since ol' Nelson lived about 1500 years after Confucius did, it makes him a PLAGIARIST. The real problem is that when you search the interent there are abundant...
