At the Grammys last night Queen Latifah officiated a mass wedding ceremony–with some couples heterosexual, some gay–followed by a surprise song from Madonna. Was it satire? I am a big fan of satirical mockery, even satirical mockery of important things such as marriage. Such satire helps expose self-importance can even help check things such as corrupt or sloppy thinking. But satire is only satire when it comes from a position of weakness or involves self-mockery. Satire from strength is not funny and more akin to propaganda. Hollywood, of course, is neither weak in terms of cultural influence nor particularly noted...

It’s not every day 33 couples of different types — same-sex, heterosexual, interracial — tie the knot at once on live TV. In fact, it was unprecedented…until the 56th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night. During their performance of “Same Love,” Grammy-award winning duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were joined on stage by Queen Latifah, who officiated a mass wedding, followed by a surprise performance by Madonna, who sang her hit “Open Your Heart.” “I look forward to the day when presiding over a historic wedding ceremony like this is just the norm,” Latifah, 43, told reporters backstage...

The music giants joined forces to promote marriage equality as both gay and straight couples were married at the same time. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Same Love" anthem became the theme song for 33 newlyweds during the 56th Grammy Awards on Sunday night. The gay and straight weddings were officiated by Queen Latifah while the hit song about equality was performed by the rap duo with Madonna hitting the stage with them, along with Mary Lambert and jazz artist Trombone Shorty. Harvard fest honors actor and rapper Queen Latifah by Tenley Woodman Sunday, February 23, 2003 <!CAT-LONW!> The Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations rolled out the crimson carpet yesterday for Queen Latifah, its 2003 Artist of the Year, during Harvard's annual Cultural Rhythms Festival at Sanders Theatre. ``If these performers could run these countries, they wouldn't be on the verge of war,'' said the Oscar nominee, who is also hosting the Grammy Awards tonight. Harvard chose Latifah for her outstanding artistic work and efforts to help needy college-bound students through her scholarship foundation. Past recipients of the award include...
