Until she retired last year, my mother was an interpreter for the U.S. Census Bureau. Every month or so, she would accompany a census worker to homes where Spanish was the main language spoken. Like so many Mexican-Americans of her generation, she's completely bilingual but prefers to speak in her mother's language.
