People cannot not be barred from juries solely because their clothing or occupation suggest they are devoutly religious, the state Supreme Court ruled yesterday. The court ruled that an assistant Essex County prosecutor abused his discretion during jury selection when he tossed a man whose attire and prayer cap suggested he was Muslim, and another who said he was a missionary. The prosecutor contended that people who are "demonstrative" about their religions "tend to favor defendants." In a 6-0 decision written by Chief Justice Deborah Poritz, the court noted that followers of certain faiths are readily identifiable by their clothing...

Court kills N. Haledon's bid to leave Manchester Regional Thursday, August 12, 2004 North Haledon must remain in the Manchester Regional School District, the state Supreme Court ruled Wednesday, but the district's funding formula must be retooled. The ruling ends the borough's attempt to withdraw from the district, but it portends lower school taxes for its residents. The court's decision, written by Chief Justice Deborah Poritz, found that while North Haledon's attempt to withdraw was not racially motivated, students from all three sending districts would suffer from the reduced diversity that would result from North Haledon's departure."This decision's going to have a...

VERMONT AUTHOR (Chief Justice L. Jeffrey Amestoy) OF SAME-SEX RULING BRINGING HIS CASE to New Jersey!! Vermont Chief Justice L. Jeffrey Amestoy was in the vanguard of the movement to give people the right to wed someone of the same sex or at least provide them all the rights of married couples. That was the essence of his controversial ruling in 1999. The legislature there responded with a law providing for civil unions, considered far stronger than the domestic partnership statute enacted here last month. Amestoy isn't shy about discussing and expanding on his thinking behind the ruling and...

Such an act, the court declared in a 4-3 ruling, is viewing or possessing child pornography, a crime that carries at most an 18-month jail term.

The ruling disappointed the state Attorney General's Office, which said it may ask lawmakers to toughen the penalties for copying child pornography. Two lawmakers yesterday said they are already drafting such a bill.

Schlafly points out (paragrph 15 of her column) that the of New Jersey Supreme Court justices who broke the law and let Lautenberg on the ballot WERE APPOINTED BY "Republican" CHRISTIE TODD WHITMAN. : "The New Jersey story gives us a bitter lesson in how Republicans are betrayed by RINOs (Republicans In Name Only)." If Lautenberg hadn't been let on the ballot, THE GOP WOULD HAVE A LOT STRONGER CHANCE OF RETAKING THE SENATE. THANKS, CHRISTIE TODD - YOU JERK. Will We Let Judges Fix Elections?
