Mysterious pits shed light on forgotten witches of the West Simon de Bruxelles Evidence of pagan rituals involving swans and other birds in the Cornish countryside in the 17th century has been uncovered by archaeologists. Since 2003, 35 pits at the site in a valley near Truro have been excavated containing swan pelts, dead magpies, unhatched eggs, quartz pebbles, human hair, fingernails and part of an iron cauldron. The finds have been dated to the 1640s, a period of turmoil in England when Cromwellian Puritans destroyed any links to pre-Christian pagan England. It was also a period when witchcraft attracted...

WASHINGTON, May 26, 2006-- While many in the Capital and across the U.S. planned respectful visits to veteran's cemeteries on Memorial Day weekend, or to solemn observances to honor those who gave their lives for our nation, Code Pink showed up at Walter Reed Army Medical Center on Friday evening for more of their usual singin', dancin', sneerin' and general disrespect under the "banner" of war protests. Sporting a Mary Poppins umbrella, this confused Code Pinko gives the anachronistic V-sign (which means Victory, as in "Victory in...

WASHINGTON, Aug. 16 - Earlier this month, as thousands of Olympians trained to compete in Athens, a small team of Croatian cavers set a new benchmark that went largely unnoticed. They found the world's deepest hole. There was no medal ceremony awaiting Darko Baksic, the expedition leader, or any of his dusty colleagues when they reached the bottom of the 1,693-foot pit. Just a long climb back up. The pit, which is at the back of a dark cave in the Velebit mountains, southwest of Zagreb, is about 217 feet deeper than the former record holder in Austria known as...
