Drivers of bigger vehicles such as pickup trucks and SUVs are more likely to hit pedestrians while making turns than drivers of cars, according to a new study. The research released Thursday by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety points to the increasing popularity of larger vehicles as a possible factor in rising pedestrian deaths on U.S. roads. The authors also questioned whether wider pillars holding up roofs of the larger vehicles make it harder for drivers to spot people walking near the corners of vehicles. “The link between these vehicle types and certain common pedestrian crashes points to another...

    MSN News ^ | March 10, 2021 | Kevin Spear, Orlando Sentinel
The Orlando area continues to lock down its rank as the most dangerous place in the nation for pedestrians. “Still number one,” said Rayla Bellis, primary author of the 2021 Dangerous By Design report that analyzes the nation’s pedestrian deaths and compares statistics of metro areas and states. Orlando and a few other cities had slightly better numbers in the new report than in one two years ago. “These places were so dangerous to begin with that even seeing these improvements, they are still rising to the top,” Bellis said. The report by the pedestrian-safety advocacy groups Smart Growth America...

Ron DeSantis and state transportation secretary Kevin Thibault to reveal a combined $883 million in Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grants nationwide. Orange County was among just a handful out of more than 600 applications across the U.S. to get funding. The grant to the Orange’s Local...

From time to time, the media tell the truth about issues that have a racial edge, usually by accident.  Such was the case in February of this year, when a local TV news crew visited a largely black St. Louis neighborhood to follow up on a hit-and-run incident. A speeding car had struck two ten-year-old boys and kept on going.  Local people were outraged.  School principal Stella Erondu told the reporter, "It's just like the wild, wild west.  Anyone can do whatever, drive however they want on these streets."  Other neighbors echoed her comments. The reporter on the scene had no reason to doubt the neighbors.  While he...

  • How California Car Culture Killed The Promise Of A 20-Minute Commute

As an innovator and early adopter of freeways, California became the symbolic capital of car culture. But the ease of movement conferred by the massive postwar freeway building boom was short-lived, turning the dream of car travel into a nightmare of congestion and long commutes. The story of how Californians went from getting around to getting stuck behind the wheel is deeply entwined with the history of the urban freeway, an enterprise that advanced earlier and on a larger scale here than anywhere else in the country. Half a century ago, there was reason for optimism about cars. Los Angeles...

Pedestrian deaths saw a significant spike in 2016, reaching a staggering total of 5,997, the highest total ever recorded since the U.S. began tracking the measure more than two decades ago. The reason? People are distracted more than ever by texting and using their smartphones. According to preliminary state data gathered for the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), pedestrian fatalities surged 11 percent from 2015 to 2016, continuing an upward trend. Pedestrian fatalities surged 10 percent from 2014 to 2015. According to the Associated Press,

Pedestrian deaths surged by an estimated 10 percent last year as the economy improved, the price of gas plunged and motorists put more miles behind the wheel than ever before, according to an analysis of preliminary state traffic fatality data. The growing use of cellphones distracting drivers and walkers may also be partially to blame, states a report released by the Governors Highway Safety Association, which represents governors’ highway safety offices. Warmer weather and shorter winters along with a greater awareness of health benefits may also be encouraging people to walk more. […] The data analyzed were from the first...

ONE of the great battlefields in the war between bicyclists and pedestrians in New York City is the Brooklyn Bridge. Pedestrians think all bicyclists are out-of-control maniacs; bicyclists — the majority, anyway — are just trying to avoid cars and not break a sweat. The stripe painted down the center of the elevated Brooklyn Bridge walkway, to separate bicyclists from pedestrians, has become a line in the sand. We need to erase that line once and for all. There are various reasons for the battle of the Brooklyn Bridge. Brooklyn seems to sprout bike commuters, as do its vaguely do-it-yourself...
