Drivers of bigger vehicles such as pickup trucks and SUVs are more likely to hit pedestrians while making turns than drivers of cars, according to a new study. The research released Thursday by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety points to the increasing popularity of larger vehicles as a possible factor in rising pedestrian deaths on U.S. roads. The Orlando area continues to lock down its rank as the most dangerous place in the nation for pedestrians. “Still number one,” said Rayla Bellis, primary author of the 2021 Dangerous By Design report that analyzes the nation’s pedestrian deaths and compares statistics of metro areas and states. Eight pedestrians were injured Tuesday evening in Sunnyvale, Calif., after a driver, who was reportedly speeding, “deliberately drove into" them, police said. The driver, identified only as an adult male, is in custody. All eight people, who were walking through a crosswalk or standing nearby, were transported to local hospitals for treatment and evaluation, Capt. Jim Choi of the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety told The Washington Post. The youngest victim is 13 years old, Choi said. Police have not identified the victims or offered updates on their conditions.

At least one person was killed and 37 others injured near the Paris Las Vegas Hotel on Sunday night, authorities said. Authorities said the woman was driving down Las Vegas Boulevard before her car jumped onto the sidewalk and struck pedestrians.
