FUKUSHIMA—— About 2,000 peaches which were ready for picking have been stolen from an orchard in Date, Fukushima Prefecture, police said Friday. According to police and the orchard owner, a man in his 70s, the peaches were stolen sometime between late Wednesday afternoon and 8 a.m. Thursday, Kyodo News reported. The peaches, which were stolen from 30 trees, are valued at about 650,000 yen. They included the highly sought-after Akatsuki variety. Police have stepped up patrols in several prefectures in the past few years following a spate of fruit thefts. Fukushima is the second largest peach-growing prefecture after Yamanashi. August...

I picked up what I suspect are the last of the summer peaches at the farmer’s market on Friday.Local pears, as has been the case for the past decade or so, were in very short supply. I fear they have fallen out of favor with the consuming public over the years and that as the trees die off they are replaced with more marketable fruit such as peaches or apples. For the life of me I can’t imagine why, I personally would choose a perfectly ripe, juicy Bartlett pear over a peach any day of the week. The problem may...

“Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.” – Henry JamesAnd with that in mind I need to get back to work in the pantry. I don’t want to miss another opportunity to enjoy a juicy peach dripping down my chin in the middle of the afternoon.Enjoy it while you can.  The season seems so short.Posted from: MOTUS A.D.

An LGBTQ media voice renewed the attack on Chick-fil-A this past weekend in the backdrop of Saturday's Peach Bowl college football game. The SB Nation sports blog's LGBTQ extension, Outsports, accused Peach Bowl sponsor Chick-fil-A and its foundation of bringing mental harm to LGBTQ athletes. Writer Cyd Zeigler says the Christian-owned restaurant chain is demeaning LGBTQ people by supporting organizations devoted to God’s design for sexual intimacy through the context of marriage. The story's headline reads Chick-fil-A's participation in sports is a "big F-you to LGBTQ people." Zeigler said he couldn't get past Chick-fil-A's donations, totaling millions of dollars, to...
  • Did climate change decimate Georgia’s peach crop in 2017?

MUSELLA, Georgia — Georgia’s peach industry suffered staggering losses this year — 85 percent of the crop wiped out by a winter that never get cold enough for the fruit to grow and ripen properly. The lingering question: was this a harbinger of climate change and many warmer winters to come? Or was it just the sort of bad luck that Georgia farmers have seen come and go ever since people began tilling the soils here? Robert Lee “Mr. Bob” Dickey, the patriarch of a family that grows a thousand acres of peaches in Middle Georgia, doesn’t hold with this...

“Here a question arises: whether it is better to be loved than feared, or the reverse. The answer is, of course, that it would be best to be both loved and feared. But since the two rarely come together, anyone compelled to choose will find greater security in being feared than in being loved.” -Nicolo Machiavelli, "The Prince" In wake of the disclosure that Iran's been secretly developing (at least one) secret underground uranium enrichment facility (sounds like spies were caught) or face more harsh words and stern warnings from the "outraged" international community, Iran offers the following response: Iran...
