Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced this morning at Google's Mountain View campus the first round of federal grants on high-risk but potentially high-reward ventures, such as converting bacteria into gasoline, to counter global warming. Chu chose Google's college-campus-like headquarters to fulfill a pledge by the Obama administration to back the kind of convention-breaking technology Silicon Valley — and the innovative search engine company — is known for.
