Did any of you know that the US supposedly has a National Contingency Plan for dealing with very large oil spills? And that EPA has legal responsibility for maintaining readiness for such an eventuality? Who knew? I’ve watched hours of coverage and this hasn’t been mentioned anywhere. The National Oil and Hazardous Substances Contingency Plan Act was signed into law in 1994 (superceding previous legislation that went back to the 1969 Torrey Canyon oil spill.) Laws and regulations are collated here. The EPA has an online book describing the National Continency Plan. See for example http://www.epa.gov/oem/docs/oil/edu/oilspill_book/chap7.pdf (change the number to...
  • Speaker Nancy Pelosi Kicks Off Book Tour

California Democrat Nancy Pelosi, the first woman speaker of the House, will promote her upcoming book, “Know Your Power: A Message to America’s Daughters” in three television appearances Monday: NBC’s “Today”, ABC’s “The View” and Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.” Something to watch for: will the ladies of the “The View” be able to keep it clean? During a 2007 Pelosi appearance on the program, Barbara Walters and Whoopi Goldberg fawned over Paul Pelosi, the speaker’s husband, who was sitting in the audience. The banter between the two hosts got a bit bawdy with the well-mannered Pelosi.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Either we're sitting on a potential cure of high oil prices or we're wasting our time. Those seem to be the two schools of thought emerging as politicians call for expanded drilling in Alaska. It's no surprise that with oil prices at $130 a barrel, lawmakers facing angry voters want to be seen as tackling the problem head-on. And while it's hard to deny that the jackpot of all untapped domestic oil lies just north of the Arctic Circle, in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, it's tougher to say whether or not extracting this energy will...

The increased use of corn-derived ethanol and other bio-fuels has been blamed for rising food prices worldwide. But defenders of these fuels say their impact on food prices is being exaggerated and that new fuels under development will largely bypass that problem in any case. VOA's Greg Flakus has more on the story from College Station, Texas. American corn, wheat and soybean fields feed much of the world and also provide the material from which alcohol fuels like ethanol are produced. Ethanol has benefited the U.S. heartland by giving farmers more stable prices for their grains and creating jobs at...

Alberta oil too costly: Saudi official Energy minister says Middle East a better investment than oilsands Shaun Polczer, Calgary Herald Published: Wednesday, November 14, 2007 Canada is one of the world's costliest oil producers and requires high prices to remain viable, Saudi Arabia's oil minister said in Riyadh on Tuesday, suggesting Saudi Arabia is a better value for investors. Commenting in Arabic, Ali Al-Naimi noted that the "sands of oil" in northern Alberta need prices to be at least $40 to $60 US a barrel to develop the massive reserves, which are pegged as second only to Saudi Arabia's. "Today,...

By Randy Fabi LONDON (Reuters) - Oil fell 2 percent to below $58 a barrel on Wednesday as a larger-than-expected rise in U.S. crude stocks offset a likely OPEC output cut. U.S. light crude for November were down $1.18 to $57.75 a barrel by 1754 GMT, adding to losses of $1.01 the previous session.
