On Tuesday, NBC’s Today show seized on a highly questionable survey claiming that many college students across the U.S. were being forced to choose between “tuition or food.” Correspondent Jacob Soboroff even went so far as to claim that “The strong U.S. economy is a myth to many American college students.” “Eating or education? Jacob Soboroff with an eye-opening look at the cost of college and its toll,” co-host Savannah Guthrie teased late in the 7:00 a.m. ET half hour. Just minutes prior to the segment, fellow co-host Craig Melvin repeated the melodramatic sentiment: “Tuition or food? How the rising...

WASHINGTON — John Kelly, the White House chief of staff, abruptly scrapped plans to travel with President Donald Trump on Wednesday so he could try to contain his boss’s fury and manage the fallout from new revelations about tensions between the president and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, according to six senior administration officials. Kelly summoned Tillerson, and their ally Defense Secretary James Mattis, to the White House, where the three of them huddled to discuss a path forward, according to three administration officials. The White House downplayed Kelly's decision to stay in Washington, saying he did so to manage...

"Seriously." "First, there was the Trayvon Martin boondoggle a few months ago." "Then yesterday, evidence of some creative editing regarding Mitt Romney’s visit to a Wawa in Pennsylvania." "Today, we have Andrea Mitchell’s spectacularly lame followup to “criticism of the Romney clip edit” — which amounted to Ms. Mitchell saying, with a sigh and a frown, “Oh, bother. Fine. Here’s what we left out.” She failed to acknowledge what the “criticism” entailed; she neglected to point out how the editing misrepresented the event being covered; and she offered nothing resembling an apology or an admission of responsibility for something that...

The New York Times, which hasn’t been reporting on NBC News editing George Zimmerman’s 911 call to make him sound like a racist, is finally doing so. Brian Stelter writes: NBC News has fired a producer who was involved in the production of a misleading segment about the Trayvon Martin case in Florida. The person was fired on Thursday, according to two people with direct knowledge of the disciplinary action who declined to be identified discussing internal company matters. They also declined to name the fired producer. A spokeswoman for NBC News declined to comment. The action came in the...

We’re a little bit closer to knowing. Reuters: An internal NBC News probe has determined a “seasoned” producer was to blame for a misleading clip of a 911 call that the network broadcast during its coverage of the Trayvon Martin shooting, according to two sources at the network. NBC News brass interviewed more than half a dozen staffers during its investigation of the misleadingly edited 911 call placed by George Zimmerman just before he shot the unarmed Florida teenager, said the sources, one of whom is an executive at the network. The clip aired on the network’s flagship “Today” morning...

On Wednesday's NBC Nightly News, anchor Brian Williams took some time out from reporting the news of the day in order to fawn over President Obama's shirtless athletics on a beach in Hawaii, proclaiming: "...the photos that leaked from the President's vacation that may reverberate with middle aged men everywhere." As still shots of Obama in his bathing suit appeared on screen, Williams announced: "The photos that come out today may make it tougher for men of a certain age who go to the beach for summer vacation this year because a lot of guys are now going to be...

Following correspondent Andrea Mitchell referring to Iowa as "Too white, too evangelical, too rural" on Sunday's NBC Nightly News, on Monday's Rock Center, correspondent Willie Geist spoke to University of Iowa Professor Stephen Bloom, who similarly fretted: "It's basically a white, very, very Christian state." Geist explained how Bloom has been "in hiding" since writing a scathing article in The Atlantic attacking Iowa as, "An assortment of waste-toids and meth addicts with pale skin and rotted teeth or those who quixotically believe, like Little Orphan Annie, that the sun will come out tomorrow." Bloom also ranted: "Those who stay in...

NBC says it's dropping most scripted programs from the network's 8 p.m. time slot next season, replacing them with reality and game shows. The unscripted fare, which is cheaper to produce, will not be broadcast in High-Definition TV. However, NBC Universal TV CEO Jeff Zucker says that's no big deal. In an interview with The Washington Post, published today at washingtonpost.com, Zucker was asked if high-def viewers might be less interested in watching non-HD programming. "It's hard to say if viewers will be less interested in unscripted programming that's not in HD when the rest of the programming is in...
