This fall, the U.S. Supreme Court essentially cemented the execution of America’s least known Islamic terrorist. Jihadist convert Alton Nolen is now set to be put to death in Oklahoma, likely by nitrogen gas inhalation. The Supreme Court’s October 1, 2018 rejection of Nolen’s final death penalty appeal went unremarked upon by news media so, partly as a result, I missed it. But the Nolen case is very much worth remembering, along with all terror attacks that occur on U.S. soil, if not just for the victims and their survivors but for lessons that can and must be learned.

On Wednesday, a judge refused to accept a guilty plea from a man accused of beheading a co-worker in 2014. Judge Lori Walkley listened to testimony all day last Friday, as psychologists on both sides argued over Alton Nolen's mental competency. Wednesday, Walkley announced her decision not to accept Nolen's guilty plea. She worried accepting it would not survive an appeal. "I've given it a great deal of thought and a great deal of prayer," Walkley told the courtroom Wednesday. "Because, I thought I could use divine intervention." She said she did not want the victims and their families to...

At approximately 1600 hrs. on September 24, 2014 30-year-old Alton Nolen was fired at Vaughan Foods in Moore, Oklahoma. He immediately drove to the front of the business, struck a vehicle and walked into the front office area. He attacked 54-year-old Colleen Hufford with a knife until he severed her head. Then he began attacking 43-year-old Traci Johnson with the same knife. He would have severed Ms. Johnson’s head if Mark Vaughan, an Oklahoma County reserve deputy and a former CEO of the business, hadn’t taken him down with three gunshots. Both Hufford, who was pronounced dead at the scene,...

A fired Oklahoma food processing plant employee who proselytized for Islam beheaded one co-worker and seriously injured another before the owner of the plant shot him, police said Friday. Moments after Alton Nolen, 30, was let go from Vaughan Foods in Moore, he drove to another part of the facility and walked into a front office where he attacked 54-year-old Colleen Hufford, police said. He used a “standard” knife — similar to the ones found at the facility — to allegedly behead Hufford. Then, he used the same knife to repeatedly stab Tracy Johnson, 43, who suffered numerous wounds and...

Naturally the first reaction of the authorities is there was no link to terrorism. Of course. A knife-wielding man barged into an Oklahoma food distribution plant and stabbed two workers — one fatally — before an off-duty cop took down the attacker. Alton Nolen beheaded a woman at Moore’s Vaughan Foods, CNN reported, and tried to kill another during the Thursday afternoon attack. Moore police would not immediately confirm the attack as a beheading. Officials told CNN there was no immediate link to terrorism. Police said the 30-year-old drove to the warehouse around 4:30 p.m. and attacked the first two people...
