A dozen House lawmakers have introduced legislation to remove President Trump's tariffs on Canadian newsprint so a study can be done on how much those tariffs are crushing local newspapers around the country. The bill, introduced by Rep. Kristi Noem, R-S.D., is a response to the 22 percent tariff that the Trump administration has imposed on some Canadian newsprint since the beginning of this year. Noem said that tariff has led to rising costs for local newspapers, and are a threat to their survival. "In recent years, new tariffs on Canadian newsprint have increased paper prices by 20 to 30...

MONTREAL – Resolute Forest Products says it’s permanently shutting down one of its U.S. newsprint machines in response to ongoing challenges in the market. The Montreal-based pulp, paper and lumber producer says its U.S. mills are “especially vulnerable” in the present currency environment, when a strong American dollar weakens their competitive position. Resolute (TSX:RFP) recently announced price increases to its newsprint sales in the United States but doesn’t expect long-term demand to improve, unlike an anticipated recovery in demand for lumber for the U.S. housing market. The company says it anticipates a $20 million expense item will be recorded for...

It's a pretty odd business decision if you turn it into a newspaper version of Fox News Channel. By Tuesday night, Adelson's new management team had begun to take the reins, firing back in their own editorial, which ran on Wednesday's front page, that they would "publish a newspaper that is fair, unbiased and accurate."

BUENOS AIRES–Argentina's senate passed a controversial bill Thursday that gives the government control over newsprint, boosting the power of President Cristina Kirchner's administration in its battle against the opposition media. The legislation gives the state control over Papel Prensa SA, the country's leading producer of paper used to produce newspapers.

U.S. newsprint demand continued to decline at double-digit rates in July, but exports are helping give the market some support, according to data released last week by the Pulp and Paper Products Council (PPPC). Newsprint consumption by U.S. daily newspapers dropped 15.7% in July vs a year ago, bringing the year-to-date total to 3.176 million tonnes, down 14.0% from the first seven months of 2008. Some of the drop in July was due to last July having one additional Sunday. However, year-to-date last year and this year had the same number of Sundays. Sunday newspapers tend to be heavier than...

Downward Trend in Newsprint Consumption Continues As North American daily newspapers steadily reduce their consumption of newsprint, price hikes appear to have come to a standstill. By Debra Garcia SAN FRANCISCO (October 27, 2006) -- As North American daily newspapers steadily reduce their consumption of newsprint, price hikes appear to have come to a standstill. The Aug. 1 increase of $20/tonne on 30 lb newsprint in the U.S. did not succeed, and demand continues to decline. U.S. dailies consumed 8.9% less newsprint in September than a year earlier and the 5.2 million tonnes consumed through the first three quarters is...

While North American newsprint usage was down again in March, output declined even more sharply, giving at least a temporary impression that producers are gaining in their efforts to keep the market tight. By Debra Garcia ETNA, Maine (May 01, 2006) -- While North American newsprint usage was down again in March, output declined even more sharply, giving at least a temporary impression that producers are gaining in their efforts to keep the market tight. NEW YORK (AP) - Shares in newsprint makers Bowater Inc. and Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. fell Monday after Bank of America cut the stocks to "Sell," advising investors to take profits after recent gains. Analyst George Staphos also cautioned that he expects growth in newsprint demand to slow within the next 12 months, as the industry's boom cycle starts to weaken. "We view 2006 as a peak pricing year, and 2006/2007 as the peak in profitability," he said, adding, "This would argue that now is the right time to sell positions." Staphos said investors should be ready to increase their holdings if...
