As California Gov. Gavin Newsom stepped on stage at the state Democratic Party Convention this weekend, Vilma Dawson applauded with the visible faith of someone who had supported him through multiple elections and a recall campaign. Dawson does not expect her loyalty to Newsom will be tested in a politically fraught decision that may lie ahead – selecting a successor to fill the seat of Sen. Dianne Feinstein, should the 89-year-old, who has already announced she’s not running for reelection in 2024, resign before the end of her term. “I’m sure Governor Newsom has a plan to appoint an African...

A new report from Maricopa County in response to a request from Maricopa County Republican Committee committeeman Tristan Manos has revealed that 4,484 ballots in the 2020 election were cast without definitive proof of U.S. citizenship. The report was shared initially by Just the News from the county office, with County Recorder Stephen Richer’s letterhead. One of the primary questions from the report asked the following: “Exactly how many people who failed at any point in time to, proactively or retroactively, provide proof of U.S. Citizenship beyond personal attestation for the purpose of voting in the November 3rd, 2020 Election...

“Debt Ceiling Tests Speaker McCarthy as He Rides Breezily Through High-Wire Act of His Career” WASHINGTON (AP) — One morning during the debt ceiling crisis, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy climbed onto his mountain bike and took a ride along the National Mall, marveling at the monuments. The next day he arrived for negotiations at the Capitol carting in tortilla chips and queso for the beleaguered reporters waiting outside his office during the 24/7 talks. Throughout the weeks of grueling negotiations McCarthy has remained relentlessly optimistic, breezing through the anxiety-filled hours, seemingly certain of the outcome. Underestimated from the start, he...

Japan put its ballistic missile defences on alert on Monday and vowed to shoot down any projectile that threatens its territory, after North Korea notified it of a planned satellite launch between May 31 and June 11. The nuclear-armed North says it has completed its first military spy satellite and leader Kim Jong Un has approved final preparations for the launch. It would be the North's latest step in a series of missile launches and weapons tests in recent months, including one of a new, solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile. Tokyo expects North Korea to fire the rocket carrying its satellite...

With the Biden administration preparing to end Title 42 on Thursday, and Texas bracing for the coming onslaught, several border security measures were approved in a meeting of the Texas House that lasted until nearly 2 a.m. The centerpiece bill, however, was defeated after House Speaker Dade Phelan sustained a point of order on the bill, sending it back to committee past the deadline for bills to be considered.

Uganda's president on Monday signed into law strict new anti-gay legislation that would approve the death penalty for people found guilty of having gay sex when HIV positive. The draconian bill received wide condemnation from the European Union, the United States and the United Nations when it was first adopted back in March, but many in the East African country support the brutal legislation. Outside of the country, rights groups have dubbed the legislation 'state-sponsored homophobia'. The version of the bill signed by President Yoweri Museveni doesn't criminalise those who identify as LGBTQ, a key concern for campaigners who condemned...

Set against mountains and forests, Nagi basks beneath a cobalt sky, reflected in perfectly symmetrical rows of submerged rice paddies. But there is more to this town in western Japan than pretty views and agricultural output. Nagi is quietly producing what much of the rest of the country is lacking: children. On a recent afternoon, groups of schoolchildren weighed down by their randoseru stopped off at the museum of contemporary art on their way home. In a public building nearby, adults struggled to make themselves heard above the din of excitable preschoolers. It is the sound of a community that...

A marketing executive at Target also serves as the treasurer of a LGBT organization which receives millions of dollars from the retailer and advocates allowing trans and nonbinary school students to keep their gender identity secret from parents. Carlos Saavedra, 43, is Target's vice president for brand management and also volunteers as a director at GLSEN, which supports LGBTQ youth in schools. Details of Saavedra's role at GLSEN come as Target's donations to the organization were placed under the spotlight following a backlash to the retailer's Pride month range, which includes 'tuck-friendly' women's swimwear. Target has reportedly donated $2.1 million...

The Ukrainian air force has been ... busy. With a pre-war force of just 125 or so fighters and bombers, the Ukrainian air arm defended the sky over Kyiv during the heady early hours of Russia’s assault on the city in the spring of 2022 and then, after that assault collapsed, shifted its attention to the front lines in eastern and southern Ukraine. In 15 months of hard fighting, the air force has lost at least half of its pre-war jet inventory—and scores of pilots. But amid this violence, one small community had been relatively idle: the section of the...

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., vowed Monday he would do everything within his power to "undo" the bipartisan debt ceiling bill and the "disaster" he said it would be for America's defense. "I will use all powers available to me in the Senate to have amendment votes to undo this catastrophe for defense," Graham wrote on Twitter. "I support raising the debt limit for 90 days to give us a chance to correct this disaster for defense." "Have total disgust for political leaders’ decision to make it remotely possible to gut our national security apparatus at a time of great peril....

WASHINGTON — President Biden acknowledged Monday at a Memorial Day event that his late son Beau died from brain cancer and not while at war — 11 days after he wrongly told US troops in Japan that his son died “in Iraq.” Biden told the grieving families of war dead at Arlington National Cemetery that his son didn’t die on the “battlefield” but that he believes his cancer may have been caused by exposure to toxic fumes from “burn pits” during a nearly yearlong deployment.

NATO has condemned as "totally unacceptable" attacks by demonstrators in Kosovo that left some 25 of its peacekeepers injured. Police and NATO troops clashed with Serb protesters in the north where there has been unrest over the installation of ethnic Albanian mayors. Tear gas and stun grenades were used to deter protesters in Zvecan, after they tried to invade a government building. NATO soldiers also formed a security cordon around two other town halls... The NATO-led troops in Zvecan at first tried to separate protesters from the police, but later dispersed the crowd using shield and batons, AFP reported. Several...

Globalization is evolving, but it doesn’t actually seem that, as one sometimes reads, that globalization is in reverse. For an overview of some key facts, Steven A. Altman and Caroline R. Bastian have produced the DHL Global Connectedness Index 2022, subtitled “An in-depth report on globalization.” It’s a just-the-facts report. Here are some takeaways: 1) The world economy is at or near a record high in exports, foreign direct investment and migration. Travel was way down in 2021, but we’ll see in the next few year if the pandemic made a permanent or temporary change. 2) The upper-right panel of...

The people who promoted the Russia conspiracy fiction are the subject of additional investigations, now that Special Counsel John Durham’s investigation has been made public. One of the primary advocates of the untrue assertion that former President Trump worked with the Russian government to sway the results of the presidential election of 2016 was Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA). There is currently a motion in Congress to censure him for the lies he uttered right after the election. A measure designed to punish Schiff with a $16 million fee for his allegations that Trump conspired with Russia in the 2016 election...
