" Good afternoon, everybody. There are very few moments in our lives where we have the privilege to witness history taking place. This is one of those moments. This is one of those times. The people of Egypt have spoken, their voices have been heard, and Egypt will never be the same."

As strikes in Egypt have spread, violence has increased and demonstrators have widened their area of protest in Cairo right up to the parliament building, the White House responded to Egypt’s continuing problems by pressuring the Egyptian government to cancel the country’s 30-year-old emergency law – in the middle of a national emergency. Continuing the White House’s almost constant interference in Egypt’s internal affairs, Vice President Joe Biden telephoned his Egyptian counterpart, Omar Suleiman, on Tuesday and asked him to lift the emergency law, one of the most important tools the Egyptian government possesses to prevent the country’s slide into...

CAIRO – State TV says Egypt's information minister has denied that President Hosni Mubarak will step down. The comment by Anas el-Fiqqi, in a written scroll on state television, comes ahead of an address by Mubarak to the nation. Announcements by the military that the demands of protesters calling for his immediate ouster would be met raised their expectations he would announce his resignation. But the minister's comment raises the possibility that Mubarak could announce a half-measure, such as keeping his title while relinquishing his executive powers.

If you "want to be hedged for complete disaster – World War III… you are better off in commodity-related investments", says Marc Faber in the latest issue of US financial paper Barron's. That might seem drastic. But Faber is convinced that China's rise, and its diminishing dependence on America, means that "eventually, we will have a war, big time".

Weasel Zippers notes what curious language this is from a past recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Not that standards have been terribly high in recent years (see also: Yasser Arafat, and later, Barack Obama). "ElBaradei's Ultimatum to Mubarak: 48 Hours to Leave the Country," from Israel National News (thanks to Ron): Egyptian uprising idol Mohammed ElBaradei has ordered Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to leave the country by Friday - or he will be a "dead man walking" and not just a lame-duck president. The aging Egyptian leader, reportedly suffering from cancer, insists he will remain in power. He said...
  • Obama Invites Crisis If He Ignores Ruling

The decision by federal judge Roger Vinson striking down President Obama's signature health care law effectively ends ObamaCare unless some higher court overturns it. In spite of this overwhelming rebuke of the law, some Birkenstock-wearing legal analysts are trying to argue that Vinson's ruling could be ignored by the administration. That's why this week's action by Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen is so significant. Van Hollen has taken the proper step of following the law, which now says that ObamaCare is unconstitutional in its entirety, relieving Wisconsin of any obligation to follow it. It is the responsibility of every...
