Islamic Front Group CAIR has been busy confusing hate crimes (which in US still require underlying crime) with Free Speech, which while not an unlimited right (no direct/imminent threats/incitement of violence; no cry Fire in crowded theatre; no profanity) is otherwise protected by the U.S. Constitution and according to long established U.S. case law. The law of Free Speech is that the government may place content neutral restrictions on speech (parade permits) but that it can not control or criminalize mere opinion no matter how unpopular.
