Once again, I’m collecting letters of support for the men and women aboard the USS Russell - DDG-59. I’m aiming for about 250 letters, so it will be a smaller project than last time. I’ve received word back from the Marines who we sent the letters to late last year, and I can’t emphasize enough how important these letters are to them. It’s really not all that much to ask to sit down and write a short note of support to those putting it all on the line for us. Please send the emails to letters@thinking-right.com.

A 56-year-old woman has pleaded guilty to stealing $300,000 from the United States Forest Service using a purchase card program that she helped to develop while she was employed by the agency in Milwaukee. As part of her plea to one count of theft of government property, Suzanne Poetz, of Milwaukee, acknowledged more than 150 instances of theft, according to Steven M. Biskupic, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. Under the terms of her plea, Poetz will be required to pay back the money stolen as restitution. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment and...
  • Bachman Is Pro-Choice On Bulbs

Washington - How many members of Congress does it take to change a light bulb? Americans may soon find out, courtesy of a contrarian piece of legislation introduced this month by Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota. Titled the "Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act", the bill seeks to repeal the nationwide phase-out of conventional light bulbs, the kind that have been used for more than a century--pretty much since the invention of the incandescent light bulb. Bachmann, a first-term Republican, is challenging the nation's embrace of energy-efficient compact fluorescent lights, saying the government has no business telling consumers what kind...

A young Ozarks woman was brutally killed 26-years-ago. Her killer was free for decades. Now her murder mystery may be solved due to DNA but detectives weren't the only people cracking open the cold case. Twenty-one-year-old Judy Spencer posed in a picture with the man she wanted to marry 26 years ago just before her death. “At the time she was dating him we thought he was too old for her," said her sister Jeanne Paris. Donald “Doc” Nash was almost twice Spencer's age but her family decided to support her. They say they now regret that. “Meeting him was...

Washington, DC - A new solar energy system will soon make it possible to produce electricity at a wholesale cost of 5-cents per kWh (kilowatt hour). This price is competitive with the wholesale cost of producing electricity using fossil fuels and a fraction of the current cost of solar energy. XCPV (Xtreme Concentrated Photovoltaics), a system that concentrates the equivalent of more than 1,600 times the sun's energy onto the world's most efficient solar cells, was announced today by SUNRGI, a solar energy system designer and developer, at the National Energy Marketers Association's 11th Annual Global Energy Forum in Washington,...

A historic event may soon be taking place; in District of Columbia v. Heller, the Supreme Court will make a ruling that may finally decide whether the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms or if it only protects a state's right to maintain a militia, this often being defined as the National Guard. While supporters of the 'individual rights' interpretation of the Second Amendment no doubt pray for a ruling that supports their views (as well as the Founding Fathers'), there may be little to fear from a ruling stating that the Second Amendment applies...

BELLEVILLE — It's easy to be skeptical of Gary Streeter's plan to put a satellite into space. After all, he has bought many of his rocket parts at Home Depot. His engine testing ground is the weed-choked yard of a 145-year-old brick home on the edge of downtown. And mission control sits in the backyard, inside a lemon-yellow building the size of a one-car garage with windows covered by colorful curtains of rockets, stars and planets. It's there, in his spare time, where Streeter — amid piles of boxes, furniture and books — tinkers with his plans to launch a...

Ten minutes to open storage blissFind out how to eradicate 99.7% of spam Having been worked over by the rise of Linux servers, Sun Microsystems wants to capitalize on what it sees as the next major "open systems" movement. The company believes that storage systems - or more specifically storage software - will transition to favor lower-cost, less proprietary plays. Sun this week took what feels like a rather minor step in the open storage direction with the release of two "how-to-guides" meant to help with the creation of a storage server and a NAS (network attached storage) appliance. The...

Bird of prey found dead along road had claw sticking through its chest A hawk was found dead along a California highway with the claw of a songbird protruding from its chest. It's not clear, however, if the partially digested meal, one claw somehow managing to get back out from a terribly wrong location, had anything to do with the hawk's death. On the evening of Sunday, March 30, Julia Di Sieno of the Animal Rescue Team in California noticed the dead sharp-shinned hawk (Accipiter striatus) while driving a sick night heron to the Solvang Veterinary Hospital. Sharp-shinned hawks are...

Like a marriage that has gone bad, I believe there are enough irreconcilable differences between those who want to control and those want to be left alone that divorce is the only peaceable alternative. Just as in a marriage, where vows are broken, our human rights protections guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution have been grossly violated by a government instituted to protect them. Americans who are responsible for and support constitutional abrogation have no intention of mending their ways.

WEST PALM BEACH — It could've been a typical spat between grocery store customer and manager, with the customer announcing he planned to take his business elsewhere. But then the customer drew his gun. The store manager drew his and so did the assistant manager. It all happened at 5 p.m. Monday at the IGA Supermarket at 1000 36th St. in West Palm Beach. And in the end, West Palm Beach police arrested customer Marshall Hugo Grant for attempted first degree murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling, aggravated assault with a firearm and carrying a concealed firearm. My father passed on Father's day in 2005. He was 69. His wife promised to have stone or whatever within a few months. I live in NJ, this was Ohio. This past week, wife and I went to Ohio to visit my mom and friends...and as I went to the graveyard to see my father's marker..there was nothing. I contacted my "step mother" and she said "she was planning on getting around to it before memorial day". I've never had any good relationship with this woman, but I guess what I'm really after...how much can a modest headstone cost? I...
