Grave Markers - Vanity
today | Me

Posted on 04/28/2008 11:20:10 PM PDT by Malsua

My father passed on Father's day in 2005. He was 69. His wife promised to have stone or whatever within a few months. I live in NJ, this was Ohio. This past week, wife and I went to Ohio to visit my mom and friends...and as I went to the graveyard to see my father's marker..there was nothing. I contacted my "step mother" and she said "she was planning on getting around to it before memorial day".

I've never had any good relationship with this woman, but I guess what I'm really after...how much can a modest headstone cost? I mean...I would think 5k would get something. My father died with 150k worth of insurance. i didn't get or want any of it...but there it is.

I've asked friends who live near there to take a look in a few months...if nothing, I'm going to put my own thing there and to hell with the harpy.

Was he a military veteran? If so, it’s free.

Good advice, Vet. And some more: If you want something done right, do it yourself. I can understand your grief for your Dad and annoyance at the woman. May he rest in peace.

My wife tragically passed away last year and I have recently been in the market for a headstone for both of us. The grave is in N.J. Biggest price difference is in the size and type of stone. Two relatively inexpensive stones are Mountain Rose from Canada, and Vermont gray granite. Prices escalate with the various other stones, some imported, some domestic.

It's important to realize that whatever you do has to be done in the warmer months of the year because they will have to lay a concrete foundation for the base underground. This obviously can not be done when the ground begins to freeze.

In New Jersey you can realistically pick up a headstone, base, and pay whatever cemetery fee involved for $2,000. To give you an idea, the stone I picked out for my wife and myself is on a 5ft. base and measures 3.5ft. across made of Dakota granite. This set me back $3,900.

I'm sorry for your loss and I hope this helps in some small way.

My Mother passed away only a month ago. My brother and I picked out a very nice polished black headstone with laser engravings and lettering on the front and back for about $3300.00. I am in Indiana.

I ordered my Dad’s from these people. They are excellent. Shipping to the cemetary is included and usually the price of the plot at the cemetary includes the setting of the marker. So all that you pay for is the marker itself.
Sorry for your loss and good luck.
