The Trump staffer who took the fall for lifting several passages of Melania Trump’s speech from an earlier address by Michelle Obama is a registered Democrat in New York, public records show. Meredith McIver, a longtime writer for the Trump organization, admitted that she had helped Melania compose the speech she delivered at the GOP convention Monday night.

An employee of Donald Trump’s company on Wednesday took responsibility for the passages in Melania Trump’s Monday night convention speech that were drawn from Michelle Obama’s address to the 2008 Democratic convention. Meredith McIver, an in-house staff writer with the Trump Organization, apologized in a statement distributed by the campaign. She said the Republican presidential nominee had rejected her offer to resign. The striking similarities between parts of Mrs. Trump’s speech and Mrs. Obama’s 2008 speech eclipsed the convention’s opening days and complicated the Republican Party’s effort to reintroduce Mr. Trump to the nation.
