Italy [Kreuz.net] Recently Father Jean-Pierre Herman - the Secretary of Archbishop André-Joseph Léonard of Brussels -- wanted to celebrate the Immemorial Mass in Milan's Cathedral. This is according to the website 'BLOG messalatino.it'. Father Herman was there for a meeting about Bl. John Henry Cardinal Newman and the Liturgy in Milan. For starters he was forbidden to celebrate the Old Mass in the Cathedral. Then he contacted the Papal Commission 'Ecclesia Dei'. They intervened and concluded mthat the priest could celebrate the Mass behind closed doors within Cathedral with only one altar boy. Editor: This is +Tettamanzi's watch.

Editor: It's just a matter of time? Assignments since 1972 already no longer required ordination. Vatican City (kath.net/KAP) Benedict XVI is evidently planning to allow women to act as lectors at services. This was confirmed by the new prefect of the Vatican Bishops Congregation, Cardinal Marc Ouellet, this Thursday afternoon. Ouellet outlined this in the context of the post-synodal document "Verbum Domini" by Pope Benedict XVI., which dealt with "The word of God in life and in the mission of the Church". In the 220 page document on the structure of the recommendations of the Bishops Synod 2008 dealt with...
  • Throw out the guitars and bring back sacred silence – a liturgical wish-list from a young Catholic

The way the Holy Father celebrated Mass when he was here in the UK in September astonished many who have been led into accepting other approaches to the way we conduct our divine praises. Are there any lessons to be learned from the guidance of our Good Shepherd? I received this eight-point wish-list from a young Catholic student which seems as clear-headed, moderate and sensible as anything else I’ve seen recently. What is it about the young that they “get” Benedict, when all we see with some of their elders is truculent annoyance?Liturgical Reforms wish-list1. Instrumentation. Explicit rules about exactly what is...

  • Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi, Lex Vivendi. As we Worship, So we Believe, So we Live

There is a Latin maxim that addresses the centrality of worship in the life, identity and mission of the Catholic Church; "Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi". The phrase in Latin literally means the law of prayer ("the way we worship") is the law of belief ("what we believe"). It is sometimes expanded to as, "lex orandi, lex credendi, lex vivendi", further deepening the implications of this truth - how we worship reflects what we believe and determines how we will live. The Church has long understood that part of her role as mother and teacher is to watch over worship, for...

At today's Noon Mass, a statement was read over the intercom prior to Communion by the Archdiocese's Communication's Director one Dennis McGrath. This Sunday was Vocation Sunday and the Archdiocese has more students studying for the priesthood than it's had for thirty years, but Archbishop was not present. The statement was to the effect that only baptised Catholics who are disposed to receive Communion and in agreement with the entirety Church's teaching may receive Communion, and specifically, that Rainbow Sashers may not receive Holy Communion, but they were invited to remove their sashes. The approach he's taken to thi situation...
