Democrat Kweisi Mfume won a special congressional election in Maryland on Tuesday and will replace the late Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) for the rest of his term in the state’s 7th district. Cummings, who chaired the House Oversight Committee, died at 68 in October 2019. His office told news outlets that he died due to “complications concerning longstanding health challenges.” Following Cummings’s death, over 30 people—including some two dozen Democrats—announced bids for the seat he had held since 1996. Mfume defeated Republican Kimberly Klacik to win the seat, with The Associated Press calling the race after 8 p.m. local time....

As Democrats elsewhere rub their hands in anticipation of congressional gains in the midterm elections, Democrats in Maryland are gloomily contemplating a scenario in which they may lose a U.S. Senate seat they've held for 30 years. And that scenario has a name: Kweisi Mfume. Smart, personable and politically shrewd, Mfume is not exactly the image of a nightmare candidate. He has the bearing, bona fides and oratorical panache of a senator, and he possesses that priceless commodity for any New Age politician -- a poignant personal narrative. Having run with violent street gangs and fathered five children by four...

It turns out the numbers in the Comptroller's race aren't the only interesting ones in a new poll commissioned by Del. Peter Franchot (D-Montgomery), a hopeful for the office. The same poll, conducted by Garin Hart Yang, showed the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in a statistical dead heat between Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin of Baltimore and Kweisi Mfume, the former congressman and NAACP leader. Cardin had the support of 32 percent of likely Democratic voters, while Mfune netted 31 percent. No other caniddate received more than 3 percent and 32 percent were undecided. In the Democratic primary for governor,...

Knock, Knock, Knockin’ Down “Kevin’s” Door City Paper Digi-Cam 2237 Linden Ave. The real estate listing spoke of great promise for the house at 2237 Linden Ave., a three-story attached single-family home with a garage and a nice-sized yard: “Vision, enthusiasm & dreams are great tools when looking at this property,” the Jan. 4 listing gamely read. “Reservoir Hill is the next Mecca for visionaries & trendsetters. Invest now & gain instant equity on settlement day.” The asking price: $135,000. Then the house fell down. And now, it seems, no one was responsible for it—especially Michael Mfume, the ex-con son...

Perennial worries about the effectiveness of the 96-year-old NAACP have been heightened recently by the ongoing search for a president to replace Kweisi Mfume, who resigned last year and has since been accused of giving preferential office treatment to an employee he was dating, creating a toxic work atmosphere. Add in financial worries and an IRS query into its nonprofit status after group leaders made...

NAACP: Nonpartisan Branch of the Democratic Party By Andrew L. Jaffee, July 16, 2004 Home   Search   Forum   Terms NAACP Chairman Julian Bond claims his organization is “nonpartisan” while at the same time using vitriolic rhetoric to attack the Bush administration. Why would President Bush wish to speak before the NAACP after the way in which they’ve treated him? Some claim Bush should swallow his pride and speak before the group in the interest of “outreach.” I would argue that Bush has already engaged in more outreach than any other administration in U.S. history: 2001: President George W. Bush appoints: Condoleezza Rice, Assistant...
