A Berkeley physician officially kicked off his petition drive Friday to recall Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger from office. Dr. Kenneth Matsumura announced the effort in September, but his petition was not approved by the secretary of state's office for circulation until Jan. 3. Matsumura claims he has about 10,000 volunteers statewide willing to help gather signatures, and he is urging them to step lively so a recall can coincide with the June primary. Riverside County Democratic Central Committee Chairwoman Shirley Walton is among those volunteers, although the party itself has taken no stance on Matsumura's effort.

A grassroots effort has been launched here in California to recall Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger's election to governor is the result of another recall. In 2003, Californians recalled Governor Grey Davis. We have local reaction to this effort to oust Schwarzenegger from office. The group calls itself “Save California Now” and their website is recall2006.com. They say they have 10,000 volunteers signed up, all with the same goal in mind: recall Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger before this year's November election. But locals aren't so sure a recall is feasible.

SACRAMENTO, California (Reuters) - A California physician launched an effort to gather a million signatures to force a recall vote on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who came to office two years ago following an unprecedented recall. Kenneth Matsumura announced the campaign prior to submitting a petition to California's Secretary of State, who oversees elections. "People are desperate, they're suffering, and I think the governor's going to have to listen," he told reporters, saying Schwarzenegger has hurt the poor and students. "The task at first seemed daunting but in the last week the number of hits to our Web site at 'Recall2006.com'...
