Today’s a busy day for those pointing and laughing at the people who mocked presidential candidate Mitt Romney over his warnings about Chinese hackers and Russia’s status as America’s greatest geopolitical foe. Among those who got in on the action was OPM Director Katherine Archuleta, who in 2012 posted a video showing that Romney possessed “little understanding of what’s going on in the 21st century.”

Well, that didn’t take long, did it? After spending the last day or so insisting she wouldn’t step down after presiding over the worst data-security failure in history, OPM chief Katherine Archuleta has suddenly found a desire to spend more time with her family. It’s either that or someone in the White House conducted a successful exfiltration. WASHINGTON (AP) — The head of the government's personnel office has resigned in the wake of a massive data breach on her watch. A White House official says President Barack Obama accepted the resignation of Office of Personnel Management Director Katherine Archuleta on Friday morning. She'll stay on the job through the end of the day. The official says deputy director Beth Cobert will become acting director starting Saturday.

Katherine Archuleta, the director of the Office of Personnel Management, will resign effective Friday, according to a White House official, one day after it was revealed that sweeping cyberintrusions at the agency resulted in the theft of the personal information of more than 22 million people. Ms. Archuleta went to the White House on Friday morning to personally inform Mr. Obama of her decision, saying that she felt new leadership was needed at the federal personnel agency to enable it to “move beyond the current challenges,” the official said. The president accepted her resignation.

When Office of Personnel Management Director Katherine Archuleta testified in the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee last week she said that the personnel records of about 4.2 million current and former federal employees had been “compromised” by a “cyber intrusion” into the OPM’s computer systems. […] When Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz asked Archuleta whether this included the files on military and CIA personnel, Archuleta gave him an identical answer to each question. “I would be glad to discuss that in a classified setting,” she said. …

As Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid vowed Tuesday to fight GOP attempts to block any of President Barack Obama’s nominations, a national Hispanic coalition put senators on notice that the group considers confirmation of Katherine Archuleta as federal personnel chief critical. .... Hector Sanchez, chair of the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, said the bipartisan coalition of 36 major Latinos groups, sent a letter to senators saying they will closely watch the process for Archuleta’s nomination and may use it in a scorecard on members’ performances on Latino issues. .... “We endorsed Katherine Archuleta a long time ago in the coalition....
