By Marsha WestHere Glenn Beck goes again, claiming he's a Christian, this time at Restoring Courage 2011 — Jerusalem. Glenn gets upset when anyone questions his Christianity. That's weird because he's a Mormon who affirms the official teaching of Mormonism aka the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). The LDS outright deny many of the essential doctrines of the Christian faith. Moreover, LDS doctrine contradicts what Scripture teaches. So of course there are Christians who feel Beck's not a true follower of Jesus Christ — not the Jesus of the Bible anyway. When his "I'm a Christian" claim...

Speaking at a Tea Party rally in Indianola, Iowa, on Saturday, half-gov Sarah Palin put forth her plan to create jobs – end all corporate taxes. Yup, it’s not enough for some companies to pay no taxes, or for some companies to pay less than 10% in taxes, Palin wants all taxes on corporations eliminated. Palin did not say anything about privately owned companies, the ones classified in the tax code as “small businesses” no matter what their size. It’s just publicly traded corporations that would benefit from Palin’s economic plan. Appearing the next morning on CBS’s Face The Nation,...

Marriage is a fundamental tenet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But church leaders now face a matrimony problem within their flock: Young single Mormons are delaying marriage.-SNIP-Maher and Forsyth reflect a shift that worries national church leaders. Women want to marry. Men want to wait. And church leaders are concerned because they believe marriage is a prerequisite for life in eternity.-SNIP-Mormon church leaders say Mormon men are postponing marriage either for financial, career or educational concerns. And sometimes for other reasons, according to church President Thomas Monson."Men are having a little too much fun being single,...

Raleigh, N.C. – If there was any question that Rick Perry is the new Republican presidential frontrunner before now, PPP’s latest poll of South Carolina confirms it. A week ago, PPP showed Perry jumping to a narrow lead in first-caucus Iowa. Now, he has a double-digit lead in what will likely be the third-voting state. Perry tops with 36% to Mitt Romney’s 16%, Michele Bachmann’s 13%, Herman Cain’s 9%, Newt Gingrich’s 8%, Ron Paul’s 5%, Rick Santorum’s 4%, and Jon Huntsman’s 2%. This is a sea change from when PPP last polled the race in June, with Perry not included....

I wondered back in March whether or not the fact that we had two Mormons running for President would create an “LDSapalooza” in the news coverage. It hasn’t quite worked out that way, in part because Jon Huntsman is polling just above Pat Paulsen. Even though Romney is the nominal frontrunner in the GOP primary his faith was quite heavily covered in 2008, and this time around the media seems far more interested in covering — or ginning up — the controversies surrounding Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann. I bet Romney’s pretty happy about that. So I’m kind of surprised...

It's not the one Huntsman's hoping to represent as its nominee for president. The Democratic National Committee just blasted out a greatest-hits reel from Huntsman's Sunday show appearance, wherein the former Utah governor criticized Rick Perry for being anti-science, Michele Bachmann for being unserious about the economy and Mitt Romney for being a flip-flopper.The DNC subject line: "Don't take our word for it ..." During the early 1830s, Emma Smith was beginning to have some strong suspicions that her husband, Joseph (Mormon prophet) might be involved in infidelity. While these were only suspicions, Oliver Cowdery (one of the three “witnesses” to the Book of Mormon) had proof of Smith’s adultery and confronted him on it. Smith denied to Cowdery that he was in any such activity. Cowdery would be excommunicated from the Mormon church on several counts including, “by falsely insinuating that he [Smith] was guilty of adultery.” 1 Emma’s suspicions were confirmed when she caught Joseph and 19-year-old Eliza Partridge locked in a...

Perceptions of Mormonism Monday, August 9, 2010By Dave Banack The Deseret News posted an article (”Mormons need to work to increase favor“) summarizing remarks by Gary Lawrence at the recent FAIR Conference held last week in Sandy. He addressed perceptions of Mormonism, based on data gathered by his polling firm. We’ve got some problems, it seems. Here are a few hightlights from the summary: Five times as many Americans have a strongly unfavorable view of Mormons as have a strongly favorable view of us.About three-quarters of those polled are unsure whether Mormons believe the Bible or are Christians. The overall favorable to...

Fox 13 has obtained dozens of photographs of polygamist leader Warren Jeffs and many of his so-called "brides." -SNIP-The pictures were seized by law enforcement during the raid on the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints' YFZ ranch in Eldorado, Texas in 2008. In all, lawyers connected to the case have estimated that approximately 1.7 billion pages of evidence was taken in the raid.Combined with diaries, audio recordings and dictations, Texas prosecutors painted a damning portrait of the FLDS leader that they showed to the jury."If the world knew what I was doing they would hang...

Polygamy Meets Big Brother The West Texas jury deciding the fate of polygamy cult leader Warren Jeffs listened through headphones to 21 minutes of heavy breathing yesterday. Some in the room wept. Others held their hands over their mouths. The X-rated recording, a cornerstone of the state’s child-sex-assault case, allegedly chronicled Jeffs’ encounter with a 12-year-old girl, an episode that ended with the self-proclaimed prophet declaring, “In Jesus Christ, amen.” The jurors heard an almost inaudible voice. “Amen,” echoed the child. It got worse. According to prosecutors, Jeffs and his new “celestial wife” were not alone. A dozen of his...

As Texas Gov. Rick Perry comes closer and closer to jumping into the race for the White House, he's also close to the top of a new national survey in the battle for the GOP presidential nomination. A CNN/ORC International Poll released Friday indicates that 14 percent of Republicans and independents who lean towards the GOP pick Perry as their first choice for their party's nomination, just two points behind former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who's making his second bid for the White House. Romney's two point margin over Perry is within the survey's sampling error. ....former New York City...

A poll unveiled this week from American Research Group shows that three Republican presidential candidates -- U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas and former Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska -- are gaining serious momentum in Iowa, site of the first presidential caucus. Bachmann, who declared her candidacy in June and has been surging in polls at both the national and state levels, topped the poll with 21 percent. Former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts placed second with 18 percent. Paul, who was the Libertarian candidate in 1988 and ran for the Republican nomination in...

If you’re the basic, ignorant wingnut whose only source of “information” is Faux News — and you know you are — then you’re probably unaware that the race for the Rethuglican nomination is already over. Yes, troglodytes, since we are far more enlightened and evolved than you Neanderthals — not that there’s anything wrong with Neanderthals! — we and our compadres in the mainstream media have already selected the top of the ticket for you. No muss, no fuss: Why go through all the tsuris, agony, and expense of the primary season when you can just get it all over...

Freshly minted presidential candidate Jon Huntsman revealed his strategy for snagging the Republican nomination in an interview with the Politico website, published this morning. This strategy will not involve Republicans. Huntsman wants your nomination, guys, but he finds you kind of embarrassing, and knows you’re not going to like the useless moderate pabulum he’s selling. Instead, he’s going to grab that nomination by appealing to non-Republicans who can vote in open Republican primaries. Kasie Hunt of Politico explains that Huntsman “made clear that he plans to capitalize on election rules in New Hampshire and South Carolina that allow independent voters...

Civility is the new code word in US politics. A perfectly fine word that for centuries meant acting with courtesy has now become verbal shorthand for "I'm desperately politically vulnerable, don't tell anybody!" Most recent case in point: the newest GOP presidential candidate Jon Huntsman.
