Openly embracing President Donald Trump didn’t work for a New Jersey lawmaker fighting to keep his seat in the state’s craziest primary Tuesday. Two-term incumbent Joe Howarth was easily unseated in the Republican state Assembly primary in South Jersey’s 8th legislative district after employing a surprising re-election strategy when he lost his local party’s support: running as a pro-Trump candidate, even though he previously bashed the polarizing GOP president.
