LONDON — With several news media outlets broadcasting or Web streaming every event at the Olympics, it is almost inevitable that water polo will have its share of R-rated moments At these Games, the most notable transition from tenacious to titillating (and quickly back again) came in the women’s preliminary-round match between the United States and Spain last Wednesday. During a particularly spirited passage of play, NBC cut to an underwater camera, hoping to show players thrashing for possession. Instead, the network gave viewers a brief bit of risqué theater as the American Kami Craig pulled at her opponent’s...

These days, summer in New York means fun in the sun — and blood in the water. There were 13 reports of shark bites recorded on Long Island in just the past two years, a disturbing trend experts say is here to stay even with New Yorker’s 1 in 4 million chance of getting nibbled on by a sea predator. “It’s a new norm that people are familiar with now — shark interaction occurring on the beaches here on Long Island specifically,” Frank Quevedo, an environmental scientist and executive director of the South Fork Natural History Museum, told The Post....

What will be the blockbuster movies of Summer 2024? Entertainment Weekly published a list at the beginning of May, which was helpful provided you eliminate mere summer releases (I Saw the TV Glow, Babes, Firebrand, Inside Out 2, The Watchers, Janet Planet, Despicable Me 4, The Instigators, Kinds of Kindness, Fly Me to the Moon, It Ends With Us, The Bikeriders, Blink Twice, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) and everything being released on streaming (Atlas, Hit Man, Ultraman: Rising, Trigger Warning, The Union, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, The Instigators, Jackpot, Appollo 13: Survival). Which leaves a much smaller group of big budget...

The notoriously tumultuous making-of story behind Steven Spielberg‘s hit Jaws and the writing of its best-selling source material by Peter Benchley are getting the documentary treatment. Timed to the 50th anniversary of the 1975 film, Nat Geo has greenlit Jaws @ 50 (working title), a doc feature that will focus on both the Spielberg film and the writing of the horror best-seller by Benchley. A summer 2025 release is planned on National Geographic and for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu. Laurent Bouzereau is set to direct. The filmmaker just completed the nonfiction project Faye, centering on the career and legacy...

After taking the stage in a housedress and, at one point, swinging his cane like a baseball bat at a Massachusetts holiday weekend screening of Jaws, Richard Dreyfuss went on to deliver a rant described by attendees as transphobic, sexist and homophobic. “This was disgusting,” posted one attendee on the Facebook page of The Cabot theater in Beverly, Massachusetts. “How could the Cabot not have vetted his act better. Apparently (I found out too late), he has a reputation for spewing this kind of racist, homophobic, misogynistic bullcrap.” The incident occurred on Saturday night prior to the film screening. In...

RICHARD DREYFUSS, the Close Encounters of the Third Kind actor, first recognised he was a manic depressive as a teenager. Over his life, he has spoken candidly about the condition - including how he questioned whether marijuana was the cause. The Jaws actor, who was in plenty of popular films in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, first figured out he had bipolar at the age of 11, although he thought the condition name was “too neutral and stodgy”. Dreyfuss, born and raised in Beverly Hills, California, said: “I have surfed my manic depression since I was 11-years-old. I enjoyed it...

From co-starring in “Jaws” to enforcing the laws. Jonathan Searle has been named the new police chief of Oak Bluffs — 47 years after he filmed Steven Spielberg’s iconic shark shocker in the same Massachusetts town that went by the fictional name of Amity in the classic summer blockbuster. His appointment generated a big bite of buzz when the tiny town’s board announced it had voted 3-1 to offer the top cop role to the longtime community servant. “I’m finding the whole thing quite funny myself!” Searle, 56, told The Post on Thursday amid all the fuss on the island...

Every summer on the Discovery Channel, “Shark Week” inundates its eager audiences with spectacular documentary footage of sharks hunting, feeding and leaping. Debuting in 1988, the television event was an instant hit. Its financial success wildly exceeded the expectations of its creators, who had been inspired by the profitability of the 1975 blockbuster film “Jaws,” the first movie to earn US$100 million at the box office. Thirty-three years later, the enduring popularity of the longest-running programming event in cable TV history is a testament to a nation terrified and fascinated by sharks. Journalists and scholars often credit “Jaws” as the...

The blockbuster film Jaws has been a perennial favorite here on Martha’s Vineyard since its release 45 years ago. The epic 1975 feature film, shot on the Vineyard in iconic places like the picturesque fishing village of Menemsha, pits a fictional seaside tourist town called Amity against a villainous great white shark whose fearsome triangular teeth—300 of them—bite and kill unsuspecting townspeople and summer visitors enjoying the local Atlantic Ocean waters. Jaws played recently at a COVID-safe drive-in theater here, allowing viewers to scream in the privacy of their own cars. The movie took a deep dive into the psyche...
