But there's a catch.Late Stone Age jugs tell us that a form of “beer,” loosely defined as represented by residues of fermentation, has been with us for 10,000 years. And the earliest evidence of wine production is 6,000 years old — so we’ve had a little time to grapple with alcohol and its bodily effects. More precisely, we’ve had several thousand years in which alcohol in its many fine forms has always gotten the better of us. Humans are, by definition, really, really good at getting drunk. Understanding the chemistry of that metabolic transaction – the immediate absorption of the...

VIDEO Eating ginger candy definitely prevents seasickness. I learned that on a recent cruise. However, on the same cruise I noticed that I never felt drunk despite drinking heavily. So I got to wondering whether eating ginger candy will prevent drunkenness. On May 5, I decided to test this idea out by eating ginger candy followed by drinking 375 ml of Tequila straight. What you see in this video is my participation in this experiment plus the result of that investigation.

Aviva Drescher, who starred on Seasons 5 and 6 of “Real Housewives of New York,” said the show’s production team could sometimes go too far with their eagerness to liquor up the cast. She recalled the time a producer phoned ahead of filming and asked her to take a shot of alcohol with castmate Ramona Singer during a reconciliation scene at a restaurant. “I told the head producer, ‘I don’t want to do a shot. Can you just fill it with water?’ ” said Drescher, 47, who grew up with an alcoholic mother and says she had never taken a shot...

For a sizeable proportion of Britons, binge-drinking is a weekend institution, with the young especially showing a greater taste for blind inebriation and its side effects than many of their European neighbors. According to the Institute of Alcohol Studies (IAS), 48 percent of British men and 31 percent of women aged 19 to 24 admit to having been blind drunk at least twice a month during the past year. Similarly, 38 percent of Britons of both sexes first got drunk before the age of 13, compared to just 12 percent of the French. Within Western Europe, only hard-drinking Danish and...
