From July 2002 to last April, 1,906 people were receiving food stamps from the state Department of Social Services based on invalid Social Security numbers, the audit report stated. Another 1,237 food stamp recipients were using the Social Security numbers of dead people, according to the audit. Fidel Sanchez-Flores told his niece last week to "pray really hard" because he had a feeling that "something is approaching," his family said. And he was unusually quiet Tuesday night, telling his wife, Vielka Molinar, that he loved her and would keep loving her after death. She said she asked him why he said that. He replied that he didn't know. She said she felt uneasy on her way to work as a nurse Wednesday morning. Her worries grew when her husband didn't answer his phone that afternoon. On Wednesday afternoon, the 52-year-old former Marine was clearing away ice and...

Team IDs ancient cargo from DNA For the first time, researchers have identified DNA from inside ceramic containers in an ancient shipwreck on the seafloor, making it possible to determine what the ship's cargo was even though there was no visible trace of it. The findings, by a team from MIT, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and Lund University in Sweden, are being reported in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Archeological Science. By scraping samples from inside two of the containers, called amphoras, the researchers were able to obtain DNA sequences that identified the contents of one...

New Haven, CT - A program approved last month by the Board of Aldermen for the city of New Haven, Connecticut, will officially go into effect July 25, when thousands of local undocumented immigrants are issued legitimate U.S. identification cards. The program, approved by a 25-1 vote, runs contrary to a growing national trend in which localities are attempting to curb illegal immigration through punitive measures, such as arrest, deportation and exclusion from public services. The program is believed to be the first of it's kind in the nation. The ID cards will be issued in an attempt to curb...

Luis Hernandez is laughing as he sells fake drivers licenses and Social Security cards to illegal immigrants near a park known for shady deals. "One way or another, we'll always find a way," said Hernandez, 35, a sidewalk pitchman who is part of a complex counterfeiting network operating around MacArthur Park, a teeming area near downtown. No matter what the federal government does, sellers vow to keep providing authentic-looking IDs for as little as $150, to anyone who wants...
