CHICAGO MAN FOUND GUILTY IN BIZARRE MURDER PLOT, FACES LIFE IN PRISON

CHICAGO — A Chicago man was found guilty in federal court Monday for his role in a bizarre plot involving murder, faked death and a switched body that was revealed from an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

James Rand, 49, was found guilty by a federal jury of aiding and abetting in murdering William White, a 47-year-old homeless man who was suffocated in an effort to fake the death of Joseph Kalady. Kalady was facing federal prosecution in 2001 for running a fraudulent immigration document scheme and attempted to fake his own death by killing White and attempting to pass the body off as his own. Rand was hired by Kalady to find a person who would not be missed by family or friends and to bring that person to Kalady, knowing that the individual would be murdered. Rand was found guilty of luring White to Kalady’s home in December 2001, knowing that Kalady planned to murder the homeless man to avoid prosecution on immigration fraud charges.

Kalady had been arrested by ICE special agents in August 2001 for his role in a scheme to manufacture and sell counterfeit identity documents to illegal aliens. While Kalady was awaiting trial and confined to his home, the government learned that he had reportedly died of natural causes in his home. Upon further investigation, however, ICE special agents grew suspicious because the dead man (White) bore little resemblance to Kalady. White’s body weighed approximately 175 pounds, while Kalady weighed about 450 pounds. After the faked death, Kalady fled to Boston, where he was arrested in December 2001 after a nationwide manhunt. He died in prison in 2003 before he could be tried for murder.

Rand faces mandatory life in prison at the time of sentencing for his role in the murder.

“Rand lured Mr. White directly into a murder trap,” said Elissa A. Brown, special agent-in-charge for ICE in Chicago. “His role in Kalady’s bizarre murder plot resulted in the death of an innocent man. We are pleased that justice was served in this case.”

ICE was assisted in the fraudulent document investigation by U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General, and the State Department’s Diplomatic Security Service. The Chicago Police Department assisted in the murder investigation.

"White’s body weighed approximately 175 pounds, while Kalady weighed about 450 pounds."

I guess it is kind of difficult to find a 450 lb. homeless guy. What an awful crime, I'm glad the fat guy is dead and the other one is going to rot in jail.
