If you’re worried about Idaho becoming too blue, don’t. “This is a red state,” said Secretary of State Phil McGrane. “No matter what you heard from someplace else, this is a Republican state, and I’m sorry for the Democrats in the room. Idaho is becoming redder. It’s just a fact.” In a 30-minute speech to about 100 Coeur d’Alene Rotarians at The Coeur d’Alene Resort on Friday, McGrane offered voter registration numbers to back up his statement. He said that between 2004 and 2023, 118,639 voters from 49 states moved to Idaho. Of those, 77,089, 65%, registered as Republicans, while...

In the book, ‘1984’ is a famous quote: “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stomping on a human face—forever.” Too often, laws are passed without looking through the foundational lens of our country. By that I mean the lens of the “purpose of government.” Where do we find that lens? We find it in one of the four organic laws of the United States: Namely, The Declaration of Independence. In it we are told the purpose of government is “…to secure God-given rights.” Without that lens, liberty is at risk of being stomped in the...

Dear Idaho, You are not a conservative state. I know you think you are. After all, more than 80% of your lawmakers call themselves Republican. The Republican Party controls the House, the Senate, and the Governor’s office. But let’s be honest. Idaho just isn’t conservative. Many Republican lawmakers vote like Democrats. Even those who campaign as “conservatives” vote liberal more than half the time. Here are some examples: HJM11—To hold President Biden and the federal government accountable for the invasion at our southern border. (Failed on the House floor.) Conservative states stand up for the rule of law rather than...

For nearly 50 years, Idaho's prison staffers have been serving Thomas Eugene Creech three meals a day, checking on him during rounds and taking him to medical appointments. This Wednesday, some of Idaho's prison staffers will be asked to kill the convicted serial killer. Barring any last-minute stay, the 73-year-old, one of the nation's longest-serving death row inmates, will be executed by lethal injection for killing a fellow prisoner with a battery-filled sock in 1981. Creech's killing of David Jensen, a young, disabled man who was serving time for car theft, was his last in a broad path of destruction...

The Idaho Attorney General’s office announced on February 2 that a district court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by The Satanic Temple against the state’s Defense of Life Act, which protects nearly all preborn children in the state from abortion. In its 2022 lawsuit, The Satanic Temple claimed that Idaho’s pro-life law infringed on its members’ rights to participate in an abortion ritual. The Satanic Temple claims abortion is a religious rite, which consists of making affirmations in front of a mirror before and after the abortion procedure in a ritualistic manner. The organization has been a strong proponent of...

The Idaho Legislature’s 2024 regular session is now one month old. Four pieces of legislation are in the works concerning firearms and gun rights. The first is a draft by Senator Brian Lenney (R-Nampa) that would add “criminal immunity” to Idaho law, giving legal cover to a person who acts in self-defense. It is an element of what has become known as “stand your ground” law. This legislation has multiple co-sponsors which include: Sen. Scott Herndon (R-Dist.1) Sen. Phil Hart (R-Dist. 2) Sen Ben Toews (R-Dist. 4) Sen. Tammy Nichols (R-Dist. 10) Sen. Brian Lenney (R-Dist. 13) – Sponsor Sen....

We are in North Idaho and need a real tough, combative, junkyard dog real estate attorney with a good track record. How do you go about finding such an attorney? The lot below us sold after being in one family for many decades. A developer bought it (call him Party 1) and has been less than forthcoming about his plans for the property. He proposes to build a second building on the property that will partially block our lake view and completely block another neighbor's lake view. The building plans comply with setback and height limitations so there's nothing there...
