The blind Spirit Lake woman fatally shot by police after firing her own weapon last year sustained nine gunshot wounds, according to a news released published Thursday by Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney Stan Mortensen. The detail comes almost three weeks after Mortensen said the officer who shot and killed 67-year-old S.A. Floyd in her apartment while conducting a welfare check committed no crimes. Earlier this month, the county prosecutor deemed the shooting justified...
...Spirit Lake police officer James Windrem “acted lawfully” and “fired his weapon in an attempt to defend himself,” as well as Spirit Lake Police Chief Michael Morlan and two other people, after Floyd shot at police.
Spirit Lake police responded to the Maple Tree Court senior living apartment where Floyd lived alone after two of her friends called 911, reporting that Floyd was depressed and possibly suicidal.
After entering Floyd’s apartment and kicking down the bedroom door, police found Floyd on the bed, concealed under blankets. The officers asked to see Floyd’s hands. She declined, so Morlan pulled the blankets off her. Body camera footage showed a dark object peeking out from under a white sheet; Morlan said he saw Floyd holding a revolver and beginning to sit up. Morlan “tripped and fell at the same moment S.A. Floyd fired her revolver,”
Meanwhile, Windrem entered the bathroom directly across the hall from the bedroom and fired five rounds into the bedroom at Floyd. He fired 10 more shots into the bedroom, until “he could no longer see S.A. Floyd’s revolver pointed at him.”
Nine bullets hit Floyd in the chest, back, left shoulder and left forearm.
“Not only is there nothing on the video that disputes Officer Windrem’s version of events, the video has corroborated his version of events,”

Floyd was “found deceased” in her bedroom three hours later, at 9:48 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.
This seems SO wrong. Didn't the officers stop in the Senior Levine Apartment office to learn about the woman that was possibly suicidal? Couldn't the officers have called on the woman's two friends who called 911 to learn about her condition? Couldn't they have inquired with her neighbors first? They would have learned she was blind and maybe learned she was armed and approached the situation differently. What was the rush to start blasting away like that?
Might this be suicide-by-cop?
I pity a blind woman, alone in her bed, shooting wildly in her own bedroom. I presume the officers had identified themselves to her.
Whatever, this is real sad story.
Lot of people lose their minds in February it’s a bad month
Homicide by cop. She didn’t call them to come check on her. There must be someone to call other than police. Never call the police unless you want someone to be shot because that is what police are trained to do. That’s why they spend so much time at the firing range and so little time getting empathy training.
Meaning the cops?
They broke into her apartment with intent on lethal violence.
Welfare check…She’s not doing so good. Gotta wait a few hours for her to bleed out.
That’s the tragic part. Her two friends thought she was suicidal and called 911. The police responded with a “welfare check.” Now her poor friends have to live with their bad decision to call 911 when they thought they were doing the right thing.
Who else might her friends have called? They obviously thought they were doing the right thing. They are probably in their late 60s or early 70s and are from the era where “police are your friends.”
As you said, “so little time in empathy training.” Not so long ago, police were locals and knew lots (most?) people in a small town. Today, they don’t stay in one job very long and move around from town-to-town. The local community connection is lost.
>> They broke into her apartment with intent on lethal violence. Welfare check…She’s not doing so good. Gotta wait a few hours for her to bleed out.
LMAO. What hyperventilating drama-queen bullstuff THAT is.
>> Her two friends thought she was suicidal and called 911
If that was the case — sadly, her suicidal thoughts became reality.
>> so little time getting empathy training
You want your sheepdogs to have more “empathy training” than range time. This, in a season wherein open borders have caused a criminal army invasion, and Americans are being MURDERED because of it.
Duly noted that you don’t have the brains to pour pee out of a boot. But your web-hearty feeling generator is working real good!
Sure. Shooting down blind old ladies in their beds is fine with you. You won’t have to worry about anybody coming to you for comfort and empathy.
I hope you’re not a gun owner. I don’t think I could trust being around you.
She was suicidal and the cops were homicidal. Someone was definitely going to die.
>> I don’t think I could trust being around you.
And I wouldn’t be comfortable living in a locale where a cop hater like you votes.
May we each have the good fortune of paths that never cross.
>> Shooting down blind old ladies in their beds is fine with you.
You left out some stuff. Let me help.
Shooting (she was already down!) a blind old lady known to be suicidal and pointing a gun at police officers and refusing to bring her hands into view is dreadful and heartbreaking but perhaps justified.
I agree, hyperventilating drama queen screed. somebody get them a bud light and tell them to sit on it. Cool their a$$ down.
A sheepdog afraid to bite is a golden retriever. useless against the wolves.
Did you read the story?
They could not go back into the apartment to check on her until they got a search warrant.
She bled out
From your comfortable position between your chair and your keyboard, please instruct us as to how YOU would have handled it correctly.
I would have went back in and checked to see if she was still alive, not wait outside for a search warrant...
I back the cops, but that was just stupid
