Wednesday marks the grand opening of a new homeless housing tower in downtown Los Angeles‘ Skid Row that is drawing praise for its ambition while taking flack for its price tag.

Weingart Tower contains 278 units, though it’s just the start for the Weingart Center Association.

“The second tower, with 302 rooms, is now rising on the south side of 6th Street and is scheduled to open in about 18 months,” the Times explains. “A third, 104-unit tower is in the planning phase.”

While the number of new units is large, so, too, is the 19-story high rise’s amenities list, which includes a gym, art room, music room, TV lounge and balconies with views of the L.A. skyline.

While some are celebrating a new tool in the fight against homelessness in L.A., others are bemoaning the cost: about $600,000 per unit.

“DTLA homeless housing tower cost $600K per unit to build”

So $800k or so per unit including markups and expenses. I know there are still a lot of idiots that give money to them, but it still cannot be enough for Homeless to pay for it. Doesn’t make any sense.

It's not about the homeless. It's about welfare for the building trades unions.

Who cares about the cost? The important questions to ask are: did they follow all of the DEI guidelines? Will trans people feel affirmed in these units? Did they apologize to and seek forgiveness from the indigenous people whose land they were building on?

Exactly. Someone always stands to profit from projects like this. The future ‘tenants’ are for reference purposes only.

What a frikkin joke,h they won’t be worth $100K each in 1 year or less and the COST should be paid for by ELIMINATING HEALTH BENEFITS for ALL Public Employee’s. They can all sign up for Obamacare.

“What a frikkin joke, they won't be worth $100K each in 1 year or less . . .”

This.

I'd wager a medium-priced hamburger the government will knock them down within 5 years because of the murder danger; and optics.

In 2 weeks it will resemble new york city from "escape from new York."

It will be run by gangs, a warlord will charge people to live there. NO one gets in or out without his permission. And cops will be afraid to go inside.

Rape, drugs, murders.

You want a prison where the inmates run the place and come and go as the please.. this is how you do it.

Nonsense. Developer donors and "homeless advocate" donors are getting and kicking back some of that 600k to the pols who authorized that money.

Its a grift of epic and apparently endless proportions.

Because they can’t mooch off the working folks and sparse number of visitors in rural areas.

Those are SRO’a notnormal apartments. 1 room plus bath. It may or may not have a full kitchen. Its probably got a small refrigerator, hot plate and sink for the kitchen. I think these towers are being built on city owned land. Price makes no sense.

How will they get their fix out in the sticks. Do you really want them terrorizing farmers when they go into withdrawal. Of course, the unbridled public defecation might be usable as fertilizer...
