TAIPEI, TAIWAN: A Taiwanese warship mistakenly launched a supersonic "aircraft carrier killer" missile towards China on Friday, the navy said, as ties between the island and its once bitter rival deteriorate.

The domestically developed Hsiung-feng III (Brave Wind) missile, with a range of 300 kilometres (around 200 miles), flew about 75 kilometres before plunging into waters off Penghu, a Taiwanese-administered island group in the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan declines to comment on report of new missile development 2012/04/10 20:09:24 Taipei, April 10 (CNA) Taiwan's defense ministry declined to comment Tuesday on a foreign report that it is planning to develop a new type of anti-ship missile. The Ministry of National Defense "would not comment" on such an issue, spokesman Maj. Gen. Luo Shou-he told CNA. Luo was asked to respond to a Defense News report that "Taiwan is planning to build an extended-range anti-ship missile." The weekly U.S. newspaper described the weapon as a possible variant of the locally developed Hsiung Feng (Brave Wind) III anti-ship missile....

As China launches aircraft carrier, Taiwan presents 'aircraft carrier killer' On the same day China began sea trials of its first aircraft carrier, Taiwan hailed its most advance missile, dubbing it an "aircraft carrier killer". Taiwan's Hsiung Feng III missile is unveiled against the backdrop of a billboard depicting a missile-riddled aircraft carrier Photo: AP During the preview for a defence exhibition on Wednesday, Taiwan brandished the indigenous Hsiung Feng III missile against the backdrop of a billboard depicting a missile-riddled aircraft carrier. The billboard bore the words: "Aircraft carrier killer." The Hsiung Feng III has made two previous public...

Taiwan supersonic missile test flops (AFP) – 2 hours ago TAIPEI — Taiwan's defence ministry on Tuesday confirmed reports that a new supersonic anti-ship missile had missed its target during a routine naval drill, in the latest in a series of setbacks. Analysts say the Hsiung Feng (Brave Wind) III missile, designed to cruise at a maximum speed of Mach 2.0, or twice the speed of sound, and with a range of up to 130 kilometres (80 miles), is difficult to defend against. But the defence ministry said the weapon, the island's first locally developed supersonic anti-ship missile, had failed...

Taiwan warship gets supersonic missiles TAIPEI—Taiwan has installed locally developed anti-ship missiles on a warship in a significant boost of its naval defense against rival China, a report said Friday. The supersonic Hsiung-feng (Brave Wind) 3 missiles were seen on the Perry-class Cheng Kung frigate in the southern port of Tsoying on Thursday, said the United Daily News. The paper quoted commander-in-chief Admiral Wang Li-shen as saying that defense authorities will determine how to deploy the missiles and on which warships after testing is completed. It also cited an unnamed navy official as saying that the authorities hope to wrap...
