Hello. I am a long time lurker here going back to 1998. This is my first post and one I am writing somewhat in desperation. I am a Christian who is the father of six kids ranging in age between 1yr. to 16yrs old. Almost a month ago my 8 year got the idea she was going to walk to see her mother at her job about five miles from our home. I was upstairs at the time trying to get my 1 year old (who was being really fussy) to sleep. She got about 2 miles before found by...

I have three computers and need more than one hooked to the net but with blocking for the kids. I also need a line to a computer in a different room. I am spending over 200 per month on various telecom and am not sure I need it. I need to figure out what is needed where. Who or what should I call and how much should I expect to spend? I thought of calling a Best Buy guy who lives in our town. Is this a good idea?

Here's a 2.4Ghz P4 with a random reboot problem. Yes, at any given moment, it reboots itself spontaneously. Problem did not go away after power supply swap. Here's the odd part: in BIOS diagnostics, I see these voltages: +12: 11.51 +5: 5.12 -12: -11.62 -5: -61.34 I reinstalled WinXPpro (wondering if it were some kind of driver problem): no dice. Then I installed Kubuntu, but again, the problem persists. I think the power regulation on the motherboard is shot, but would like to save this hardware. Any thoughts?
  • GED Question

    02/10/2008 6:01:44 AM PST · by hsmomx3 · 20 replies · 128+ views
Is the GED test the same in every state or is it different? My son took it yesterday and said it was a piece of cake and said people you would not think would be able to pass it did. Then I had educators from out of state saying that it was a very hard test and one where a lot of studying would be required. My son took it because the public school would not accept credit for his first two years of high school at a non accredited private school. Long story but he dropped out of public...

  • Help: All USB Ports Disabled Including Keyboard & Mouse

    02/02/2008 10:49:39 PM PST · by Williams · 33 replies · 3,629+ views
My only defense is I didn't cause this one. My daughter managed to either uninstall or disable ALL the USB ports on her Dell running Windows XP, so that even the mouse and keyboard won't work. On restart, the computer is stuck trying to run the found new hardware wizard, but it doesn't matter because I can't do anything w/o mouse or keyboard. There are no PS2 connectors on this computer. I think I'm mostly looking for an encouraging word, that when I bring this in for repair, a techie will be able to bypass the USB's, connect a keyboard...
  • OUESTION: Select Comfort Sleep Number Bed, Is it worth it?

    02/01/2008 11:21:59 PM PST · by Yosemitest · 48 replies · 2,835+ views
I want your opinion and advise, especially if you've owned a Select Comfort Sleep Number Bed, for any amount of time. These beds seem terribly expensive, and all I know is what I've seen on the internet and heard on the radio. But I want to hear from owners who've had experience. Is it worth it? Are you satisfied I'm considering a "demo bed" at a significant savings. Phone number (800) 215-4593 and the sale ends Feb 21, 08, but all sales are final.

Please excuse the vanity, but I know many of you have very definite (and often informed) opinions about PC v. MAC. I have an opportunity to upgrade my home desktop and laptop with designated funds from work. In other words, somebody else’s money, enough to seriously soup up a Mac Pro desktop and a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. If I choose PC, then I'll upgrade only my laptop. No need to upgrade my PC desktop - the drudgery of re-installing software far outweighs the little jump I'd make in PC desktop technology. If knowing about my PC use is...

I have a heat pump (Ruud) and it's normally in good working order. I had it worked on and checked two months ago, it's not low on freon. It's frozen over. I am too. I turned on the emergency heat but that only keeps it about 62 in here. This has been going on for 4 days and there's no end in sight. There's frost and ice all over the unit outside, I have been calling heating companies and no one can come yet. I went and bought a heater from Walmart, but it isn't putting out any heat to...
  • America Supports You: Foundation Offers Military Families Financial Help

America Supports You ^ | Samantha L. Quigley
WASHINGTON, Jan. 11, 2008 – Troops on extended deployments can rest easier knowing that if their family experiences an unexpected financial emergency, help is available. The American Soldier Foundation was created to assist servicemembers on extended duty and their families, Daniel Wright, the organization’s president, said. Assistance also can extend to families of those killed in the line of duty. “We believe that the lives of the men and women keeping our country safe should not be any harder than they have to be,” Wright said. “The foundation can provide grants or interest-free loans for medical expenses, education, funeral...

Hey fellow FReepers. My camera, the Canon Powershot A540 has decided to bite the dust after 13 months. I strongly suspect abuse by spouse and possibly being used as a hand grenade by a 1 year old. So, I need a new camera. $200 top budget. Will be used to take pics of kids. Lots of indoor shots. Lots of outdoor shots. Maybe even some action shots. What I want. 7MP. 3x zoom, but prefer 4x or better. Here is where my language will say what I mean, but not in proper "camera" world terms. I want the flash to...
