For a single guy, Ghent, which is down near Old Dominion U. around Hampton Blvd, is not bad. Ocean View and Willoughby Spit have cheap rent, but that tends to be cracktown, i.e. don't want to walk down the street w/o at least a knife.

There are a lot of nice areas in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, but if your work is in Norfolk, I'd say Ghent. And I'd stay away from Portsmouth altogether, unless you're going to be downtown in the old historic district.

I recommend an Aircraft Carrier. I live on one and you can’t beat it. The food’s great and there’s never a dull moment.

Checkout Ghent and downtown in Norfolk. In Virginia Beach you can look at Chick’s Beach or the new Town Center. Chesapeake is a nice bedroom community but it doesn’t offer much to a young single guy. Old Town Portsmouth is great too. You can take the ferry across the river from Norfolk and anywhere you can walk to in 5-10 minutes is pretty good.

ODU condemned some neiborhoods around the school, and is expanding - I just bought a house that is now two blocks from campus (my son is in ODU), in a former crack neighborhood that is becoming more student housing.

If you want, I can freepmail you my realtor’s contact info.

Hehe...you will be okay as long as you aren’t a sailor...

I was born there, and spent time there during my tour in the Navy.

We used to call it “Nof**k Vagina”...but the “No Dogs or Sailors on the Grass” signs were what REALLY made me laugh...:)

“Nof**k Vagina”...

That’s funny, that’s what I called it too. I was at NAS Oceana.

Ah hell. Nearly all Navy towns are the same to a degree in that respect.

Fortunately, the military IS held in a higher regard nowadays than when I was in back in the Seventies, and having short hair or a uniform, is just as likely today to get you a word of gratitude from someone as it is to get that look of disgust that I remember getting on occasion.

I remember hitching a ride with my buddy who went into the Navy with me, and when the guy who picked us up asked what were were doing after we graduated and we said we were joining the Navy, he nearly went off the road in a rage and spent 10 minutes haranguing us at the top of his lungs.

We were more than 10 miles from home, but said “You can let us off...the house we’re going to is right up here...” It was frikking scary...he clearly had an issue with the concept of the military!

I agree with Squidly. VABeach is a traffic nightmare. A nice place to visit, though. I live in the Fan District in Richmond and Ghent is a lot like this, and I’m telling you the Fan is a great place to live.

I lived in Ghent 20 years ago. Lots of old architecture, restaurants and clubs, museums, within walking distance. There was a ferry to Portsmouth with similar entertainment. I avoided suburbia, aka Va Beach Va because it was . . . suburbia, government workers, minivans, no sidewalks, kids, school buses. . . you get the idea.

I loved Ghent. I lived on Westover Avenue, near Stockeley Gardens, for several years and was very happy there. I liked the arts festivals in the spring, I had a part time job at Waterside Mall while I put myself through college at ODU... those were pretty nice times.
