I was born in Iowa but moved to CA in 1942 when I was 3&1/2 years old. So, I'm the closest thing to a native Californian as you can get. I quite high school to join the Navy in 1956. We had mandatory military service back in those days. I was separated from active duty in 1959 as a 2nd Class Signalman.
