Arnie accused of terminating help for poor By Oliver Poole in Los Angeles (Filed: 26/11/2003) Arnold Schwarzenegger, who promised that his governorship of California would be marked by "action, action, action", proposed almost $2 billion (£1.25 bn) in budget cuts yesterday. Health care and education were among the areas worst hit. The cuts were outlined by his new finance director Donna Arduin, who has swiftly been nicknamed "Axe Arduin" in the state capital, Sacramento. She already had a reputation for slashing spending in other states and described the waste and California's budget deficit as "breath-taking" when she reviewed state finances....

America promises new help to Saudis after bombing By John R Bradley and Rupert Cornwell 11 November 2003 The United States closed ranks yesterday with its Gulf ally Saudi Arabia as a Saudi prince warned that suicide attacks by Saudis were a "wake-up call" to confront home-grown "extremism and fundamentalism". George Bush assured the de facto ruler, Crown Prince Abdullah, in a telephone call that Washington "stands with Saudi Arabia in the war against terrorism". Richard Armitage, the US Deputy Secretary of State, who is in Riyadh on a scheduled stop-over, also pledged that the US "will be fully participating...

A massive Russian jet capable of releasing more than 10,000 gallons of water in a single dump could help solve California's wildfire crisis, but the federal government continues to resist it, asserts two U.S. congressmen. Reps. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., and Curt Weldon, R-Pa., said at a news conference yesterday the Russian government repeatedly has offered the Ilyushin-76 'Waterbomber' – reportedly capable of dousing a fire the size of 10 football fields – to the U.S. Forest Service for its use but has been rebuffed each time. Rohrabacher spokesman Aaron Lewis told WorldNetDaily the federal government's response amid wildfires that have...

PASADENA, Calif. - The most destructive wildfires in California's history left thousands of people homeless, but help was pouring in. On Thursday, a stream of people dropped checks and clothing at a Red Cross collection site at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. The agency has provided food, shelter and small grants to more than 6,000 people from Ventura to San Diego County since the fires began. By midday, the agency had collected more than $100,000. Luke Schwaiger, age 4, plucked $3 in savings from his wallet while his 2-year-old brother, Jack, gave $1. "We've seen it on TV. We've been...

FREEPERS, I have taken a break from Terri's 24/7 Vigil to ask for your participation in the next phase of trying to save Terri's life while we wait for good news. I have not received the Governor's Itinerary for the following week yet from myflorida.com. We are asking Floridians and out-of-staters to freep the Governor's Mansion in Tallahassee. If you need ideas for signs, it's basically urging Governor Bush to issue an executive order to stay Terri's starvation. At this time, the Florida Supremes are reviewing filings today by Terri's counsel. We need northern Florida to freep Jeb Bush STAT...

Bush will ask for help to govern Iraq in UN address By Andrew Gumbel in Los Angeles 22 September 2003 One year after he told the United Nations he was prepared to go it alone in Iraq if necessary, President George Bush will return to the UN General Assembly tomorrow to appeal for international help to meet the mounting human and financial cost of maintaining a post-war occupation force. Mr Bush's cap-in-hand gesture seems unlikely to be accompanied by much humility, however, as the prevailing rhetoric in the United States continues to blast the French for obstructionism and suggests that...

I have been an active user of bookmarks in the past, sluffed off for awhile, and am back to trying to save some very interesting threads. I have noticed however that even when I get the complete confirmation page showing that a thread has been saved, there is no sign of it in my profile links. Am I missing something that has changed? Thanks in advance!

FORT HUACHUCA -- More than a thousand Misty Mates are heading to Iraq to help keep 11th Signal Brigade Soldiers cool. Jana Proctor, who started the fund-raiser Operation Desert to Desert on Aug. 17, delivered the misters to the brigade's commander, Col. Brian Hurley, on Wednesday morning. Hurley called Proctor "a lady who is a quiet professional." Presenting her with a plaque and his commander's coin, the colonel said the high temperatures in Iraq create unbearable conditions for soldiers. Even though it is cooling down to 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the daylight hours, the desert heat will continue well into...

"I have a philosophical problem with conceal and carry." -- Governor Bob Holden This year the Missouri Legislature passed Right-to-Carry (HB 349) and Frivolous Lawsuit Preemption (SB 13) with overwhelming support from both parties. Yet, Governor Bob Holden vetoed both bills. Holden’s vetoes have stopped Missourians from being able to protect themselves and their families outside the home, and allowed St. Louis and other Missouri cities to continue to sue gun manufactures for the acts of criminals who misuse their products. Regardless of Holden’s anti-gun antics, Missouri’s Constitution allows the legislature to override a governor’s veto. On September 10-11, 2003,...

A wonderfully devoted FReeper, LBGA, is in need of FReeper prayers. I spoke with her sister last evening and with LBGA, herself, this morning, and things are not looking good. When first diagnosed with cancer last year, LBGA wished to keep her condition a secret. She fought her affliction with admirable strength and candor. She really felt she had it beaten this past March when .45MAN and I had the pleasure of attending two pro-America/Support the Troops rallies with her - one in Milledgeville, GA and the other in Atlanta. She fell ill again shortly after the Atlanta rally and...
