In nearly every major city in the U.S., people of color are exposed to more extreme urban heat than white people, a new study found. Using government temperature and census data, researchers examined the distribution of heat islands – parts of cities with higher average temperatures than the surrounding areas. The study, published Tuesday, found that during the summer of 2017 in nearly all large urban areas, the average non-white person lived in a census tract with higher heat island intensity. Glenn Sheriff, a co-author of the study and environmental economics professor at Arizona State University, was surprised to find...

The scientist at the heart of the climate change email scandal tried to hide flaws in key data, it is claimed. Professor Phil Jones, director of the University of East Anglia's prestigious climatic research unit, is said to have refused to release information that could have cast doubt on a widely-quoted study into how the growth of cities affects temperature. The study, by the professor and a Chinese expert in 1990, concluded the effect of urbanisation was small - so city sprawl alone could not explain recent rapid rises in temperatures. The research was published in the journal Nature and...

I am very doubtful on these numbers, in 1936 Springfield, IL had 25 days above 100 and 69 days above 90 and had an average summer temperature of 94. This year we had one hot week with temps in the high 90's and August was cool.

California's growth patterns -- the migration to hot inland regions, construction of big new homes and paving of open space -- are contributing both to increasing temperatures and record demand for electricity. Experts say development choices can play a large role in making hot weather even hotter. "People usually talk of greenhouse gases. What's forgotten is what we've actually done to the surface of the planet,'' said Bill Patzert, a climatologist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. "I call it extreme makeover warming.'' The housing boom in places like the Central Valley causes growing electricity demand during heat waves,...
