The family of Robert Card, the man accused of shooting and killing 18 people in Lewiston, Maine, have shared several details with police about Robert’s “acute” mental health episodes the months leading up to the mass shooting. In an exclusive report, NBC News reported Katie Card who is married to Robert’s brother, shared that Robert began to hear “horrible” voices talking about him just shortly after he was “fitted for high-powered hearing aids.” Katie Card told NBC “He was picking up voices that he had never heard. She continued “His mind was twisting them around. He was humiliated by the...

The man suspected of fatally shooting more than a dozen people in Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday night is still at large, police said Thursday, as his family urged him to turn himself in. Law enforcement officials are looking for Robert Card, 40, whom they said is considered armed and dangerous. Card, a firearms instructor and a longtime Army reservist, began to hear voices that were saying “horrible” things about him about a couple of months ago when he was fitted for high-powered hearing aids, according to Katie Card, who is married to his brother. She said his mental health had...

My Hearing had degraded over time. I used TVEars for a while. In 2018 I purchased an inexpensive Hearing Aid for $59.(Britzgo) I started with one end later got a second. I found that in noisy environments I had difficulty hearing - the only thing the hearing aid did was make all sounds louder. As time went on I found one hearing aid in either ear - depending on surrounding work best but not in noisy area or when multiple people were talking. As technology improved I get a smaller pair for $300. (Britzgo). Result smaller buttons - harder to...

Avoid common mistakes when buying over-the-counter hearing aids. Here's everything you need to know about OTC hearing aids, with help from an audiologist. You no longer need to wait on a hearing exam or prescription to obtain hearing aids. You now have the option to buy one over the counter to treat mild or moderate hearing loss. That means hearing aids are more accessible to the public, as well as less expensive in general. But there's a lot to consider before you hit purchase. Here's what's available and where you can buy your own over-the-counter hearing aid. What type of...

Are there any risks with OTC hearing aids? Yes, as with any medical device, there are risks. If you do not have a hearing test performed by a doctor prior to buying OTC, you may be unprepared to use them properly. The max output on the devices may cause hearing loss if you do not require a high level (a doctor can tell you your max output level via a test). Additionally, OTC hearing aids may pose a risk to minors. Creed adds, "I worry about kids getting them. The FDA is not requiring an ID to purchase." She says...
  • Can AirPods do the job of $10,000 hearing aids?

Hearing loss is thought to affect as much as 15% of American adults, but hearing aids aren’t always easy to come by. A team of scientists exploring low-cost alternatives has turned to Apple’s AirPods as a potential solution, assessing them alongside conventional hearing aids to find they stack up surprisingly well. Not only are hearing aids expensive, obtaining them usually involves a series of medical exams, a prescription from an audiologist and then follow-up visits to ensure they are properly tuned. US authorities have made moves to improve access to these devices, with the FDA recently establishing a new category...

Got any recommendations on hearing aids. Got a couple VA issued Starkey's that only last three daze on a battery load and had a wiz bang option to adjust by phone and had that feature programmed out. So much texting going on everywhere I kept getting programmed out! I feel my ear canals are blocking the true worth of a aid and most krapp being said out loud is worthless any how. I have a couple Siemens that are dogs at my own expense and have seen some new "light" transmitted ears that look interesting but I think a home...

I need to buy I hearing aid. I thought it would be nice if you could link them to your smart phone. I found one made by GN ReSound http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/11/25/first-fully-integrated-made-for-iphone-hearing-aids-are-set-to-hit-the-market They are about $3,000 each. So I looked at the availible apps for Iphones and Andriods. There were too many to sort out the best so I came here. I have a iPhone 4 but my contract needs in aug and I can get any type of new phone. I haven't bought the hearing aids yet because I want to pair the phone, hearing aid and the apps. Costco has...

Hello fellow Freepers, I always note the fact that the posters here generally respond with candor I can appreciate even though I may not always agree. That is why I am asking for advice in dealing with what could be a serious, saddening problem of which I have been made aware. Today, when I picked up my son from daycare, the daycare worker pulled me aside and informed me that other children at the daycare came to her to say that the driver of the bus they ride (from school to daycare in the afternoon), has been mean and rude...

A set of hearing aids costs about $2,200 on average. Mead Killion thinks that's crazy. He believes an effective aid for mild-to-moderate hearing loss could be sold over the counter for around $100 -- using technology that already exists.

But bringing inexpensive hearing aids to the masses won't be easy. Dr. Killion, a hearing-aid pioneer, is battling a tight-knit group of licensed specialists who by law are the only people allowed to dispense hearing devices. The Food and Drug Administration, which regulates the industry, so far has sided mostly with the specialists, who are trained to calibrate and fit devices suited to each patient. If anyone could sell a hearing aid, the FDA says, elderly people might be victimized by shoddy merchandise and fail to get treatment for serious medical conditions.
