Manny Charlton, a founding guitarist of the Scottish band Nazareth, has died at age 80. The news was confirmed by his grandson in a social media post. No cause of death was given. In addition to playing with Nazareth until 1990, Charlton produced Guns N' Roses' earliest demos. Charlton was born in Spain but his family relocated to Dunfermline, Scotland, when he was a child. He played in several bands in the '60s before one of them evolved into Nazareth, which he helped form in 1968. He played on some of the band's most successful recordings, including 1975's Hair of...

Finding in fruit flies may yield new treatmentsHard-drinking fruit flies have helped U.S. and German scientists uncover a gene that may shed light on humans' tolerance to alcohol. The gene -- named hangover by its discoverers -- is part of a genetic pathway that enables the flies to deal with increasing amounts of alcohol, according to researchers. They also believe this mechanism can lead to alcohol dependence and addiction. The finding may be important because "identifying the genes you inherit that relate to your tolerance to alcohol helps us understand how genes set you up for a vulnerability to alcoholism,"...

Want to forget about terrorism and all those distracting rumors of war? Need to ignore the economy for a while? Got the holiday blues? Our culture has a sure fire cure -- the traditional spate of post-Thanksgiving movies. This year, despite a clamor over the latest Harry Potter film, much of the attention is going to another fantasy called The Two Towers -- part two in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Will it succeed in distracting us for a while, conveying audiences to a world that is at once more beautiful and stirring than humdrum modern life? Naturally, I...
