My son is a firefighter in Pampa, Texas, a town 50 miles East of Amarillo. He called this afternoon saying that there were bad grass fires all around their area. Since that time I have not heard from him again, but am getting reports from different people in that area. They are evacuating 7 towns, two complete counties (Wheeler and Roberts), one county, Hutchinson, is completely "lost". Cars are backed up on the highways trying to get out of the area. Wind has been blowing in excess of 60MPH.

CARBON, Texas -- Weary firefighters worked through the night attempting to contain three major fires, including one 25-mile-long blaze that charred farm fields, barns and some homes in Eastland County. Grass fires elsewhere in the drought-stricken region had apparently destroyed a couple of tiny Texas towns. Other fires had destroyed homes and forced hundreds of people to evacuate in Oklahoma and New Mexico. Officials warned that the dry, gusty conditions and extreme fire danger would continue. "We don't know where we will be today," Oklahoma City Fire Department Maj. Brian Stanaland said Monday morning. "At this point, we consider the...

BATON ROUGE -- A firefighting crew from the Louisiana National Guard on Thursday headed to Texas to help with the ongoing battle against wildfires that have charred more than 100 homes and killed four in that state and Oklahoma. Three UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters rigged with firefighting water buckets departed Louisiana early Thursday for Grand Prairie, Texas, to help fight the fires which swept across nearly 20,000 acres in the two states. "I am proud to send the very capable members and resources of the Louisiana National Guard to support our neighbors in Texas," said Gov. Kathleen Blanco in a news...

MUSTANG, Okla. Dec 27, 2005 — Grass fires driven by gusty wind damaged several homes in Oklahoma and threatened others in North Texas on Tuesday. Three Oklahomans suffered minor injuries, authorities said. The biggest fire burned at least a square mile in a rural area near the town of Mustang, southwest of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma City Fire Maj. Brian Stanaland said. He said he did not know exactly how many homes were damaged there. One civilian suffered minor injuries. TV station helicopter footage showed at least a half-dozen structures were burned in Mustang, but conditions appeared to improve by late...
