A 100-foot fissure has opened up in the Grand Teton National Park – not far from the potentially catastrophic Yellowstone volcano. The giant crack in the Wyoming–based national park has prompted officials to shut down areas from tourists in case of landslides. The Grand Teton National Park said in a statement: “The Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point areas are currently closed due to elevated potential for rockfall. [...snip...] If it was seismic activity beneath Grand Teton which caused the fissure, it could be a sign that Yellowstone is reawakening. If the Wyoming volcano were to erupt an estimated 87,000 people...

"Because I live in southern Arizona, I take advantage of this location to make an annual trip to the Grand Canyon. On my previous trips I’ve talked about the right way to hike the canyon (slowly!) and then provided some suggestions for proper preparation....This time I am simply going to suggest two hikes. One is very easy and should be done by every visitor to the South Rim. The other hike is for those who go to the bottom, and reserve themselves one day there for a day hike. Ninety percent of all visitors to the Grand Canyon never step...

youtube.com/watch?v=bVKVB0MImOg After an Intro, Ferde Grofe's 'Grand Canyon Suite', Donkey Theme, starts with a picturesque depiction of pack mules on the trail for the first 8 measures. The second 8 measures of a descending, frenetic theme, don't make programmatic sense, unless there is an explicit visual depiction of a donkey tumbling off the trail. In the third 8 measure section, the donkey's plaintive hee-haw is heard.

All Good Things: Countdown Begins Toward Cassini's 'Grand Finale' Around Saturn By Leonidas Papadopoulos Artist's concept of Cassini's final orbits between the Saturn's innermost rings and the planet's cloud tops. This set of orbits will consist the last leg of Cassini's mission, called "The Grand Finale," which will culminate with a plunge on Saturn's atmosphere in September 2017. Image Credit: Image Credit: NASA/JPL It has become something of a hackneyed phrase, but in the case of NASA's Cassini spacecraft it is rather fitting: an epic mission of exploration of Saturn that has single-handedly changed our view of the ringed planet,...

The canyon, found by airborne radar data, has the same characteristics of a winding river channel like the Grand Canyon in Arizona. It is at least 750 kilometers (460 miles) long, making it longer than the Grand Canyon. In some places, it is as deep as 800 meters (2,600 feet), on scale parts of the Grand Canyon. This immense feature is thought to predate the ice sheet that has covered Greenland for the last few million years.

LITTLE COLORADO RIVER GORGE, Ariz. (CBS Las Vegas/AP) — Daredevil Nik Wallenda does it again. In an unofficial time of 22 minutes, 54 seconds, Wallenda crossed a quarter-mile tightrope 1,500 feet above the Little Colorado River Gorge near the Grand Canyon. Wallenda paused and knelt twice to get “the rhythm out of the rope” and murmuring prayers to Jesus almost constantly along the way. His stepped slow and steady, but jogged and hopped the last few steps. “Thank you Lord. Thank you for calming that cable, God,” he said about 13 minutes into the walk. The stunt comes a year...

Chris Wallace just claimed on national TV that he looked up the word "grandiose" in the dictionary and that it is a negative word and that Gingrich misused and misapplied it to himself. In the segment, Wallace was obviously spinning against Gingrich, and in that piece he was saying the "grandiose" exchange with Santorum was Santorum's shining moment. However, he claimed he looked the word up in a dictionary and that the word is negative in meaning. If he actually looked it up in any dictionary, it would have had multiple meanings. In honesty, he would have had to report...

All of us may one day serve as grand jurors in federal court, and I hope this article will educate the reader to his/her true power as granted by the Constitution. For that power, despite having been hidden for many years behind the veil of a legislative fraud, still exists in all of its glory in the 5th Amendment to the Constitution. The US Supreme Court has confirmed and reinforced that power. [Excerpt of last third of article is as follows] Antonin Scalia effectively codified the unique independent power of the Fourth Branch into the hands of all citizens sitting...

WASHINGTON, Oct. 22, 2008 – Two units of the 82nd Airborne Division will be treated to a heroes’ welcome in November when Holmdel and Middletown, N.J., host a joint homecoming for their “adopted” troops. The units and the cities were paired by America Supporting Americans, a California-based nonprofit group that links military units with communities across the country. “The centerpiece of ASA's work is the Adopt-A-Unit Program,” said Linda Patterson, the group’s president and founder. “Believing that a strong, supportive connection between young men and women of our armed forces and the civilian communities they are ready and willing...

Grand Canyon Gorge Is 9 Times Older Than Thought Hope Hamashige for National Geographic NewsApril 9, 2008 New research on the Grand Canyon challenges the long-held belief that the canyon was carved by the mighty Colorado River about six million years ago. Parts of the canyon were formed more than 50 million years earlier than previously thought, according to the new study. The newfound evidence, which will be presented in the May issue of the Geological Society of America Bulletin, shows that part of the canyon known as Upper Granite Gorge formed more than 55 million years ago. The history...

Compiled, plagiarized and pseudo authorized by Daryl L. Hunter In the wake of the Iraq War, there has been much Monday morning quarter backing by America's weak offensive line (liberals) who insist the “War on Terror” is to be waged only against Osuma bin ladens al Qaeda. This essay is to make the connection of pan-Islamo Fascism and its long terrorism history. As the democratic world confronts al Qeada's Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Hezbollah 's Hassan Nasrallah, and their followers, many among us are trying to understand militant Islam, where it came from and its aims....

CAMP TAQADDUM, Iraq (July 3, 2006) -- People go to convenience stores to buy pampers and baby formula or stock up on chips and dip for the next day's big game. But in Iraq, military stores known as post exchanges, play a far more important role. At this sprawling logistics base centered between the restive cities of Ramadi and Fallujah, service members now have a brand new post exchange - PX for short - where they can stock up on goods ranging from basic hygiene items to 'high-tech' equipment like laptop computers and DVD players. Built in a former mess...

I read about Grand Gulf, Missouri in a recent "Natural History" magazine, and I admit to a minor fascination with small state-park size canyons and gulches and runs, typified by such places as Turkey Run in Indiana; Letchworth State Park (not so small) in New York; and the Flume in Franconia Notch State Park, New Hampshire -- places I've been to. This appears to be another interesting one that I've not been to. So here's a few pictures of Grand Gulf. I was away from my computer all last week and couldn't post my weekly "feature". The pictures are from...

Because she has led countless billions and billions of people to the promised land of books, because she preaches self-help and self-sufficiency and not least because she has shown that even a middle-aged person can keep weight off, I must tiptoe up to the amazing Oprah and merely whisper to her that in the case of James Frey, the liar whose memoir turns out to have a good deal of fiction alongside fact, she is not only wrong but deluded. What she needs is a session with Dr. Phil. Frey's memoir, "A Million Little Pieces," is about his recovery from...
