The fight over Senate Bill 1070 took to the streets of downtown Phoenix, as riot Police were called to the Capitol to control an unruly group of protesters. Witnesses say a group protesting against SB1070 began to fight with a man who was for the controversial immigration bill. Police tried escorting that man away from the scene, fearing for his safety, when they too came under attack by people throwing items, including water bottles. A judge sentenced a 37-year-old Lincoln man Monday to four to five years in prison for inappropriately touching a young girl. In the largest such operation in U.S. history, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested 286 foreign nationals in California with criminal records in a three-day enforcement surge that ended Thursday night. PHOENIX - Arizona police pulled over a refrigerated truck and found 97 illegal immigrants in the back among near-freezing produce, police said on Thursday. The officer stopped the truck on a highway a few miles (km) north of the border city of Nogales late on Wednesday, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said. An inspection found 97 adults and children from Mexico and Guatemala crammed into the trailer, which was heavily chilled to one degree Celsius (34 Fahrenheit). No one was harmed. PHOENIX — About one in seven of the 1.2 million students in Arizona schools is there directly or indirectly due to illegal immigration, a study released Tuesday by the Pew Hispanic Center estimates. Jeffrey Passel, senior demographer for Pew, figured from 100,000 to 110,000 students are from families in which at least one parent is an illegal immigrant, although the children themselves were born here and are citizens. That's an increase of 20,000 from three years ago.

Mexican drug cartels have displaced the mafia as the "number one organized crime threat" in the United States, Sen. Joe Lieberman said Monday as his Senate committee heard testimony in Phoenix on border violence. Lieberman, an independent Democrat from Connecticut, and Sen. John McCain, a Republican on Lieberman's panel, told FOX News that the United States needs to step up the fight against the drug cartels.
