A Democrat judge has nearly halved the damages awarded to Gibson’s Bakery, which previously won a defamation lawsuit against Oberlin College. The jury originally awarded $44 million to the bakery in punitive and compensatory damages after members of Oberlin protested and labeled the bakery racist. Damages have now been reduced to just $25 million.

Gibson’s Bakery Attorneys at TPM address misleading statements made by Oberlin College OBERLIN, OHIO: An Ohio jury recently sent a clear message in the case of Gibson’s Bakery v. Oberlin College: The truth still matters. After an intense trial that lasted nearly six weeks, the 134-year-old family bakery was awarded $33.2 million in punitive damages in addition to $11 million in compensatory damages. But despite the jury’s verdicts against Oberlin College and its Vice President and Dean of Students on libel, tortious interference with business relationships and intentional infliction of emotional distress, officials at Oberlin College continue to propagate a...

“Which office do I go to to get my reputation back?” – Raymond Donovan The media had a field day painting Donovan, Reagan’s former Secretary of Labor, as a mafia stooge after he had been indicted on corruption charges in 1985 for his work with a construction company accused of having mob ties. The only problem was the charges didn’t hold up, in fact they spectacularly imploded. Donovan’s attorneys rested their case without ever calling a single witness, contending the prosecution failed to prove Donovan did anything wrong. The jury agreed, and Donovan was acquitted (along with all the...

Identity politics is having an identity crisis. Parading as a noble cause to elevate only one side of the hyphenated American, identity politics has always cultivated a mean streak, a vulnerable underbelly of hatred for the "other" it indiscriminately blames for prejudice against African Americans, Native Americans and any other culture perceived to be at the mercy of the white man. No one disputes that prejudice based on race and religion is a terrible thing, but it's a simple truth that truth should not be sacrificed in looking for it. While identity politics seeks to liberate the victim of prejudice...

Oberlin College in Ohio has devolved into one of academe's most infamous examples of political correctness, one of those unwelcoming places that rails against anyone who brings speakers to campus if those speakers upset Oberlin's crusades against the racist/sexist/anti-gay menace. Now Oberlin's administration is being punished in a very significant way for a very significant offense, and it's about time. It has taken political correctness to an abusive extreme. The Wall Street Journal opinion section headline summed it up: "Oberlin Pays for Smearing the Town Grocer." It has been ordered to pay $44 million in damages to Gibson's Food Market...

Update: Since this article was originally written, President Marvin Krislov and Dean of Students and Vice President Meredith Raimondo have issued an official response to Student Senate’s resolution ceasing all support for Gibson’s Bakery, financial and otherwise. The text of the response can be found here. Chants of “No justice, no peace” reverberated across campus from early morning into late last night as hundreds of protesters lined West College Street, calling for a boycott of Gibson’s Bakery. An altercation between Gibson’s employee Allyn Gibson and College sophomore Elijah Aladin Wednesday evening led to the Oberlin Police Department arresting Aladin and...

The Lorain County jury overseeing the trial between Gibson’s Bakery and Oberlin College and Vice President and Dean of Students Meredith Raimondo has ruled in the bakery’s favor, announcing $11 million in compensatory damages last Friday and an additional $33.2 million in punitive damages yesterday. Of the total $44.2 million, it is possible that the assigned punitive damages will be reduced to $22 million because of an Ohio state law that caps punitive damages at twice the amount of compensatory damages. Compensatory damages are meant to compensate a plaintiff for any losses they have endured, while punitive damages are meant...

Although IRS reports show the university is worth around $1 billion, Oberlin College still claimed poverty to avoid paying punitive damages to Gibson’s Bakery. As Breitbart News reported this week, the far-left Oberlin College lost a defamation case filed by Gibson’s Bakery after a local jury found the university liable for falsely accusing the family bakery of racism. The jury ordered Oberlin on Friday to pay Gibson’s $11.2 million in compensatory damages for defamation and intentional interference with a business. Legal Insurrection reported on Thursday that “the jury awarded a total of $33 million in punitive damages, which will probably...

The jury just rendered its verdict on punitive damages in the Gibson’s Bakery v. Oberlin College case. Daniel McGraw, our reporter in the courtroom, reports that in addition to the $11.2 million compensatory damages awarded last Friday, the jury awarded a total of $33 million in punitive damages, which will probably be reduced by the court to $22 million because of the state law cap at twice compensatory (it’s not an absolute cap, but probably will apply here). That brings the total damages to $33 million. We will have the breakdown soon. The jury also awarded attorney’s fees, to be...

For those who despair that the rule of law in America is being crushed by liberal fake news, we have encouraging news out of Ohio. A jury has ruled that Oberlin College, one of the nation's most left-wing institutions of higher learning, must pay the proprietors of Gibson's Bakery in Oberlin, Ohio, $11.2 million in damages for libel, slander and other disruptions that the college caused in the business by encouraging false charges of racism. The day after the 2016 presidential election, an Oberlin student entered Gibson's Bakery, near the college campus, and slipped a bottle of wine into his...

Attorneys for Oberlin College and Dean of Students Meredith Raimondo moved for a mistrial June 11 in a libel suit brought against them by Gibson’s Food Mart and Bakery. On June 7, a Lorain County Common Pleas Court jury awarded the plaintiffs $11 million. The jury was scheduled to hear the punitive portion of the trial, but attorneys for Oberlin College produced five motions to the court moments before they were to return to the courtroom. Because of this, Common Pleas Judge John R. Miraldi called a recess while he reviewed the motions and released the jury for the day....

Publicly accusing jurors of disregarding “the clear evidence our team presented” when the trial is not over is another baffling move by Oberlin College. There are a lot of things about the way Oberlin College handled the Gibson’s Bakery dispute and lawsuit that have had me wondering who, if anyone, is in control over there. As mentioned numerous times, “from the start of this case I have questioned the aggressive and demeaning attacks on the Gibsons as a defense strategy,” and “I’m still shaking my head at the tone-deafness of the defense in belittling this family business.” The jury seems to...

If you want to follow a legal battle by someone who knows what he’s talking about, you could not do better than reading Legal Insurrection, William Jacobson’s website. For some time now he’s been documenting the lawsuit filed by Gibson’s Bakery, a five-generation family bakery near Oberlin College that was boycotted based on false claims of racism after they had several students arrested for shoplifting, a crime to which the students pled guilty. …a black male Oberlin College student was stopped for shoplifting wine at Gibson’s Bakery and Market in downtown Oberlin, OH. Gibson’s had been in existence since 1885,...

This Jury Just Awarded The Bakery $11 Million A family that has owned and operated an Ohio bakery near Oberlin College since 1885 suffered accusations of racism and protests after stopping a black Oberlin College student from shoplifting. . . A witness for the plaintiffs, accountant Frank Monaco, had testified that the Gibsons were set to lose about $5.8 million over the next 30 years because of the accusations of racism. He noted that the business had been in operation for over 130 years, adding, “When you have people thinking you’re racist, and you live in a small town, the...

Full title of article: "Oh-oh! Oberlin College’s insurance company says their policy doesn’t cover the huge verdict against it" Excerpt: The insurer that covers Oberlin College for liability, Lexington Insurance Company, filed documents with court last month indicating that its umbrella liability policy would not cover costs of any judgment for the plaintiffs. That means that if, after the appeals process has run its course, the plaintiffs move to collect the $11 million a jury just awarded them (plus whatever punitive damages – up to $22 more – are awarded next week), Lexington likely won’t pay and Oberlin would have...

In her just-released memoir, Not That Kind of Girl, Lena Dunham describes her alma mater, Oberlin College, as "a liberal arts haven in the cornfields of Ohio." After a month-long investigation that included more than a dozen interviews, a trip to the Oberlin campus, and hours spent poring through the Oberlin College archives, her description of the campus remains the only detail Breitbart News was able to verify in Dunham's story of being raped by a campus Republican named Barry.
