The GAU-8 Avenger is one impressive weapon system and the foundation of the A-10 Warthog, despite its age, won’t go away anytime soon. Used for combat during the time of the Gulf War in 1991, the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt – also known commonly as the “Warthog” – destroyed more than 900 Iraqi tanks, some 2,000 other military vehicles, and approximately 1,200 artillery pieces. The aircraft also reportedly shot down two Iraqi helicopters.

A multi-million-pound fighter jet exploded and another was damaged when a mechanic accidentally opened fire from a third plane during maintenance. The F-16 Falcon jet, worth around $19million (£15million), was destroyed in the blaze as it was parked at a military base in Belgium and the second plane sitting next to it suffered fire damage from the on-board Gatling cannon. Two technicians working on the Belgian Air Force stealth planes were said to have been injured in the incident at the Florennes air base, 60 miles south of Brussels, on Thursday afternoon.

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Navy is going to have an indigenized version of the Phalanx, a close-in weapon system (CIWS) on the military vessels used for defense against anti-ship missiles, a top commander said. Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Lieutenant Commander of Iran’s Navy Admiral Gholam Reza Biqam said the country’s Defense Ministry has gotten good results in upgrading the Phalanx firing system.
