  • My Vehicle Milage Has Dropped 5%+. How About Yours? (VANITY)

The milage in both of my cars had dropped off in the last couple of months. Instead of getting 280 miles per tank, I am now getting 260 miles per tank, or even worse. I keep a close eye on the milage as a general indication of how my cars are running, but I can't see why this has happened. I have no leaks, no lights, no rough running. I Checked the Engine, and it is still there. The plugs look good. I think it might be the fuel blend. If that is the case, a lot of people should...
  • EPA Finalizes Yet Another Expensive Mandate

Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) codified their war on American drivers by finalizing new car mileage mandates, otherwise known as CAFÉ standards. Increasing the cost of new cars by thousands of dollars, new CAFÉ rules will require cars built in 2025 to get at least 54.5 miles per gallon. With current 2011 cars averaging 28.6 miles per gallon, the EPA is going to require automotive manufacturers to nearly double fuel economy standards in a little more than a decade. While the Obama administration has made the 2009 Auto-Bailout one of the center-pieces of...
  • Why car makers lie about fuel consumption (in Europe)

There are lies, damn lies, statistics—and official EU car fuel consumption figures. I and others have been banging on about this for years; the figures quoted by manufacturers in their ads usually (but, interestingly not always) bears absolutely no relation whatsoever to what happens in the real world. … To get those “official” figures, new cars are subjected to something called the “New European Driving Cycle”, a series of short runs on a “rolling road” where the car is accelerated, put on a short cruise and decelerated under laboratory conditions. All the car makers have to put their cars through...

Transonic Combustion, based in Camarillo, CA, has developed a gasoline fuel injection system that can improve the efficiency of gasoline engines by 50 to 75 percent, beating the fuel economy of hybrid vehicles. A test vehicle the size and weight of a Toyota Prius (but without hybrid propulsion) showed 64 miles per gallon for highway driving. The company says the system can work with existing engines, and costs about as much as existing high-end fuel injection.

This means that we can expect, on purely theoretical grounds, that our mileage will drop, due to wind resistance from temperature change alone, at -10°F to 81.8 percent of the mileage we experience at 90°F.

    * Take It Easy - aggressive driving ruins efficiency as much as anything. Revving the engine, quick acceleration, and high speed travel reduce your MPG a lot faster than you may realize. When applicable, use your cruise control to help keep the RPMs level. * Timing is Everything - Stop-and-go traffic, crowded roads, and looking for a parking space are all fuel-burners. Try running your errands outside of rush hours and peak shopping times. With the amount of stores that are open late or 24-hours, you can find most of what you need later or earlier than peak times. Not...

Simple, clever, fun. That's the philosophy behind the vehicle you see pictured above, the Loremo (pronounced lo-ray-mo which is short for Low Resistance Mobile). Of course, there's nothing simple about designing and building a car, but there has certainly been a large need for cleverness to meet our current standard of "fun". Don't let the picture fool you. There's nothing really new here, aside from the impressive 50g/km CO2 figure. This car achieves its high level of fuel efficiency by taking current fuel-saving methods to a level almost beyond reason. A main part of this is weight saving. Every part...

WOLFSBURG, Germany — The head of the Volkswagen Group's supervisory board, Ferdinand Piëch, used celebrations surrounding his 70th birthday over the weekend to point at the resurrection of plans for a new super-economical small Volkswagen. In an interview with the Braunschweiger Zeitung newspaper, Piëch said the production of a car capable of traveling 100 kilometers on just one liter of fuel (the equivalent of 235 miles per U.S. gallon) is now achievable, citing advances in materials and general reductions in costs. Piëch hinted that newly installed Volkswagen chairman Martin Winterkorn will likely make the car a reality, although he declined...
  • For increased gas mileage, perhaps try nail polish remover. Acetone

ATLANTA – Acetone can do a number of things. It can remove thick, ugly nail polish. It can be used as paint thinner. People can sniff the fumes for a quick high. In addition, if you believe the Internet, it can significantly increase the gas mileage of your car. The idea of adding acetone to gasoline is not new. Racecar drivers began using it in the 1930s to enhance their cars’ performances on the track. Since then, there have been reports of people who have tried it with varying results. In an article for SmartGas.net, author Louis LaPointe extolled the...

Jefferson City, Missouri -- Secretary of State Robin Carnahan's Commissioner of Securities Matt Kitzi issued a consent order last week concerning a St. Louis business that claimed it could produce a car that runs on water. The order alleges that William P. Alexander and his company, Emerging Technologies Development Company, offered and sold unregistered investments in Emerging Technologies Investment Group LLC. In a July 2004 news release, the company claimed it would create several thousand jobs in St. Louis to produce a water-powered car that would likely make the need for gasoline obsolete in 100 days. However, the company admits...

Ford is reportedly developing a "new form of automotive propulsion," which could dramatically change the automotive landscape. Ford is said to be developing a "Hydraulic Hybrid" for implementation in it's F-150 series truck. According to NewTechSpy, "the hydraulic hybrid could be the greatest innovation since the internal combustion engine itself." The new engine differs from the conventional hybrid design. Currently a "hybrid" engine's main energy comes from gasoline which recharges batteries that move the car at low speeds. In hydraulic systems, excess energy is stored in hydraulic cylinders, which have 3 times the capacity of a nickel metal hydride battery....

That performance placed third out of 24 teams in the collegiate division, a remarkable achievement for a first-year team in the competition, according to Tom Edelmayer, a technical specialist for Eaton Corporation's Engine Air Management Operations.
